T: Aki, do you have any interesting news to share
before we start the lesson?
A: (Trying to remember…) Ah…I was able to cross a
bridge on our family trip last week.
T: Crossing a bridge? I bet it was not the crossing
itself that became memorable. Was there something
about the bridge that tickled your excitement?
A: Yeah, it's not just a usual bridge which we see
normally here in Japan. It seems that I'm
transported to another place when I saw it for the
first time.
T: Let me guess… is that the Rainbow Bridge in Odaiba?
A: Nope, that bridge is famous in its own right. The
bridge I am referring to is the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge
or a.k.a the Pearl Bridge.
T: I'm just curious, what makes the Pearl Bridge
outstanding compared with other state of the art
bridges?
A: The record speaks for its grandeur and marvel. It has
been the longest suspension bridge in the world since
its completion in April 5, 1998. It has the longest
central span of any suspension bridge at 1,991 meters.
The six-lane bridge connects the mainland of Honshu in
Akashi City, Kobe to its neighboring island of Iwaya on
Awaji Island crossing the busy and treacherous Akashi
Strait.
T: Wow, those are jaw-dropping statistics. It seems that
you have done a good read about its features. I bet the
construction of the Pearl Bridge was a herculean task
and a record-breaking engineering.
A: Indeed! It withstood the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake
in 1995 while it was under construction.
T: Very ingenious engineers and planners. They anticipated
and put into consideration the frequency and intensity
of earthquakes in your country.
A: Right! If I may add, the bridge has other life-saving
feature that is often overlooked.
T: What is it?
A: If you will notice, the area is a perilous waterway
that often experiences severe storms and claimed
more than a hundred innocent lives. With that bridge
linking the separated islands, the death toll is
reduced during stormy months.
T: That's new information. The usefulness of that bridge
could not be underestimated.
A: I agree. But the downside is the costly toll fee when
you cross the bridge.
T: Well, life is priceless.
A: There's a trade-off… Hmmm, I should not think about
the price considering safety, convenience and comfort
that I experienced in traversing its entire length of
3.9 km.
T: Right, so are you now ready for your lesson?

T: アキ、レッスンを始める前に何かおもしろい話ある？
A: (思い出そうとしている)うん…先週の家族旅行で橋を渡った
よ。
T: 橋を渡った？渡ったことが自体が印象的だったんじゃないで
しょ。その橋にはあなたの興味をくすぐる何かあったの？
A: うん、それは日本でよく見る普通の橋ではなかったよ。最初に
見たとき、何だか別の場所に連れていかれてる感じがしたんだ。
T: 当ててみようか？…それってお台場のレインボーブリッジ?
A: ちがう、その橋自体は有名だよ。僕の言う橋は明石海峡大橋、
別名パールブリッジだよ。
T: ただ興味があるだけなんだけど、他の最先端の橋と比べてどう
してパールブリッジが飛びぬけていいの？
A: 記録がその橋の偉大さや驚きを語ってくれるよ。その橋は1998
年４月５日に建てられて以来ずっと、世界で一番長いつり橋なん
だよ。このつり橋の一つのブロックは1,991 メートルで、
最も長スパンで出来ているつり橋だよ。６車線の橋は交通量が
多く危険な明石海峡をまたいで本州の明石市、神戸と、近くの
淡路島の岩屋を繋いでいるんだ。
T: うわぁ、それはびっくり仰天のデータだね。その橋の特徴につ
いてずいぶん勉強したようだね。パールブリッジの建設はとて
つもなく記録破りな作業と任務だっただろうね。
A: その通り！ 1995年のあの阪神淡路大震災のとき建設中だった
この橋は持ちこたえたね。
T: とても頭のよいエンジニアとプランナーだね。彼らはこの国で
起こるであろう地震の発生頻度と規模を予想して考慮していた
んだ。
A: そう！付け足せば、この橋は他にも知られざる救命にたけた特
徴があるんだ。
T: それは何？
A: 気付いているかな、この場所は危険な航路で、度々嵐に襲われ
て百人以上の命が奪われたんだ。この橋が島を繋いだことによ
って嵐の季節に出ていた死亡者数が減少したんだよ。
T: それは新しい情報だね。この橋の便利さは過小評価できないね。
A: 僕もそう思う。ただこの橋を渡るマイナス面と言えば、通行料
金が高いことだね。
T: ん、命はお金で買えないからね。
A: 代償だね。う～んと、3.9キロメートル横断した時の経験から
いうと、その安全性、便利さや快適さを考えると料金のことは
考えるべきではないな。
T: そうだよ、じゃあレッスンの準備はいい？
