最近、DC近郊のメジャーなスーパーであるGiantで、スリランカのDilmahのティーバッグが売られています。お値段高め。２０袋入りで７，８ドル。おいしいです。
スリランカ（旧セイロン）と言えば、サンフランシスコ平和条約。
何の関係があるの？と思われるでしょうが、当時のセイロン代表の講和条約での演説が衝撃的だったため、私の頭の中でセイロン茶と平和条約が結びついてしまったのです。その演説は、”Cnference for the Conclusion and Signature of the Treaty of Peace with Japan"という 1951年のState Dept発行の本に載っています。Amazonで、used bookとしてたまに出てきます。今日、見つけたので買いました。
太平洋戦争がアジアの開放のために役立ったという話は、アメリカ人など（日本でも？）には、相手にするのもばかばかしい作り話と思われています。ところが、セイロン代表のJayewardeneが以下のことを講和会議で発言してくれているのです。アメリカ人などにこの本のコピーを見せると、逆上されたり、純粋に驚かれたり、興味深い反応がみられます。右か左か、思想傾向にかかわり無く、ご参考にしていただければ幸いです。

Why is it that the people of Asia are anxious that Japan should be free?
