おはようござまーす
とっても良い天気、今日は久しぶりに自宅でのんびりできます
さて、先日のつづきです。
この英文は、まん亀さん
の知人・カイルさんが、
ラジオ放送を収録したテープをヒアリングして書きとられたものです
朗読は、
英訳されたロジャー・パルバースさん、本人によるものでした。

Strong in the rain
Strong in the wind
Strong against the summer heat and snow
He is healthy and robust
Free from all desire
He never loses his generous spirit
Or the quiet smile on his lips
He eats four go of unpolished rice
Miso and a few vegetables a day
He does not consider himself in whatever occurs
His understanding comes from observation and experience
And he never loses sight of things
He lives in a little thatched roof hut in a field in the shadows of a pine tree grove
If there’s a sick child in the east
He goes there to nurse the child
If there’s a tired mother in the west,
He goes to her and carries her seeds
If someone is near death in the south
He goes there and says “Don’t be afraid”
If there is strife and lawsuits in the north
He demands that the people put and end to their pettiness
He weeps at the time of drought
He plods about at the loss during the cold summer
Everyone calls him blockhead
No one sings his praises or takes him to heart…
That is the kind of person I want to be

ロジャー・パルバース：Roger Pulvers～略歴～
作家、劇作家、演出家。東京工業大学世界文明センター長。
1944年、ニューヨークに生まれる。
UCLAおよびハーバード大学大学院で政治学とソビエト近代史を学ぶ。
ワルシャワ大学、パリ大学を経て、1967年に初来日。
以降京都産業大学講師などの職につきながら執筆活動を始める。
宮沢賢治、坂口安吾などの作品の翻訳、日本の読者に向けた作品も執筆、
また2007年には、『新バイブル・ストーリーズ』を発表。

日本に滞在して４０数年。
賢治を心から愛し、尊び、慕うロジャーさんの英訳は、
もし賢治が英語が話せたら、
きっとこう書くであろう・・・と、想像できるような内容だと思います。
私は、英語の専門家ではありません。
英語を熟知している訳でもありません。
だけど、これは賢治の英語だ！と、理屈ではなく”肌”で感じるのです。

賢治は、私達と同じ生身の人間でした。
欠点を当たり前に持っている、普通の人間だったのではないでしょうか。
今を生きる人間なら誰もが「こういう人間でありたい」と、憧れます。
賢治は、一人の人間として「こうありたい」と、素直に書き記したのでしょう。
だからこそ、この詩が人々の心を打つのではないか？と思うのです。
この詩を改めて見つめる機会を与えて下さった、まん亀さんに感謝。
一緒に聴きながら、時間を共有させていただいた皆さんに感謝。
英訳をして下さったロジャーさんに感謝。
