For little more than a decade, from about 1963-1975,
there was a vibrant home-grown music industry in Singapore,
the traces of which can be found in flea marketts,junk shop,
and sometimes right on the sidewalks of Chinatown,in the
selling baskets of old men.
The7" records can be had for
anywhere between on to five Singapore dollars, and come
in a spectrum of conditions from almost-like-new to severely
degraded.
Some of the sleeve have been taped together, others have
some quick notations in Chinese script that indicate
favorite tracks.
They are artifacts of a particular time and place, a swinging
Singapore recently made independent, a groovy place
at a post-colonial crossroad.
Yet this music is in many ways larger than the deteriorating
cardboard sleeves and mould-corroded vinyl that house it.
