『芳一！』 突然の声に芳一は驚き
返事も出来ずにおりました。
すると今度は 叱りつける様な、厳しい口調に変わったのです。
『芳一！！！』
『はい！』
盲目の男は、その荒々しい声に、怯えるように返事したのです。
『わたくしめは、全く目が見えぬのです。
お呼び頂いている方の、お顔も見えぬのです。』
『恐れることは無い。』
突如 現れた男は 少し声を静めて
『私はこの寺近くに 宿をしている者だ。
そなたに 用向きを伝えんが為に使わされた。
我らがお仕え申しているお方は やんごとなき身分のお方だが、
ただいま、他の沢山の高貴な方々とともに、
この赤間が関に ご逗留されておるのじゃ。
壇ノ浦の戦いの跡地を御覧になられ、
そしてそれを偲（しの）びたいと思し召され
本日、かの地を訪ねられたのじゃ。
すると、そなたが かの戦いを
上手に諳（そら）んずると聞こし召され
その演奏をご所望になっておるのじゃ。
そこにある、琵琶をもち、
これより私と共に、皆さまがお待ちの館に参上いたせ。』
" HOICHI ! "
HOICHI was too much startled,
for the moment,
to respond ;
and the voice called again,
in a tone of harsh command, ---
" HOICHI ! ! ! "
" Hai ! " answered the blind man,
frightened by the menace in the voice, ---
" I am blind ! I cannot know who calls. "
" there is nothing to fear, "
the stranger exclaimed,
speaking more gentle.
" I am stopping near this temple,
and have been sent to you with message.
My present lord,
a person of exceedingly high rank,
is now staying in Akamagaseki,
with many noble attendants.
He wished to view the scene of the battle of DAN-NO-URA ;
and today he visited that place.
Having heard of your skill in reciting the story of the battle,
he now desires to hear your performance :
so you will take your biwa and come with me at once to the house
where the august assembly is waiting. "
