平家の亡霊たちは、
昔は 今よりも ずっと、気が荒々しかったのです。
夜、舟を見かけると、
突然現れては、その舟を沈めようとしたり、
泳ぐ者を待ち構えていては、
海の底に引きずり込もうといたしました。
赤間が関に 『阿弥陀寺』 を建立したのは、
こうした彷徨える死者たちの魂を
慰めようとしての事だったのです。
そのためこの死者たちの墓地も
浜寄りの場所に建てられたのでございます。
そこには、入水した幼き帝と、
重臣たちの名が刻まれた 供養塔が建てられました。
そして決まった日に欠かすことなく、
その菩提を弔う法要が 行われるのです。
寺が建立され、墓も造られてからというもの、
平家の亡霊たちは、以前ほど
浜で悪さをすることは 無くなってきたのですが、
それでも時々、思い出したように、
奇怪な所業に出るのでございました。
これは、まだ本当の意味で、
亡霊たちが 成仏していない証拠にございます。
In former years
the Heike were much more restless than they now are.
They would rise about ships passing in the night,
and try to sink them;
and at all times they would watch for swimmers,
to pull them down.
It was in order to appease those dead that the Buddhist temple,
Amida-ji, was built at Akamagaseki.
A cemetery also was made close by,
near the beach ;
and within it were set up monuments inscribed with
the names of the drowned emperor and of his great vassals;
and Buddhist services were regularly performed there,
on behalf of the spirits of them.
After the temple had been built,
and the tombs erected,
the Heike gave less trouble than before ;
but they continued to do queer things at intervals,
--- proving that they had not found the perfect peace.
