Ian Macfarlane toured Electrolux's fridge making factory at Orange in the New South Wales Central West today, ahead of an expected decision by the company's board later this month about the plant's viability beyond 2015.Mr Macfarlane says the Federal Government cannot afford to support the manufacturing industry to same degree as other overseas governments. He admits while wages make up a large percentage of company expenditure, there are also other factors."The biggest issue here is probably the high dollar," he said."When I was last minister, I reckon the dollar was 53 cents."It may have even been lower than that."So you can virtually say the dollar has doubled, and that means the competitor's product is costing consumers here half what it was costing them when I first became minister in 2001."Tomorrow, Mr Macfarlane will visit food manufacturer, Simplot, in Bathurst. Both facilities are subject to performance reviews, herb basil for sale
