人民の人民による人民のための政治、（英: government of the people, by the people, for the people）は、エイブラハム・リンカーンが1863年11月19日、南北戦争の激戦地となったゲティスバーグで戦没者を祀った国立墓地の開所式での、272語、3分足らずの短い挨拶（ゲティスバーグ演説）の中のことば。民主主義の本質を語ったものとして世界的に知られる。

Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth
on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and
dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing
whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so
dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-
field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of
that field as a final resting-place for those who here gave
their lives that this nation might live. It is altogether
fitting and proper that we should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate…we cannot
consecrate…we cannot hallow…this ground. The brave men,
living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it
far above our poor power to add or detract. The world
will little note nor long remember what we say here, but
it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the
living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished
work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly
advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the
great task remaining before us…that from these honored
dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which
they gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here
highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain;
that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of
freedom; and that government of the people, by the people,
for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

八十七年前，私たちの父祖は，この大陸に新たなる国家を打ち立てました．自由を原点として懐胎され，人はみな平等であるとの命題に捧げられた国家です．
今､私たちは，たいへんな内戦の渦中にあります．その国家が，あるいはそのような原点をもって懐胎され，そのような命題に捧げられた国家一般が，長らえることができるかどうかが試されているのです．私たちはその戦争の激戦地に集っています．その国家が生き長らえるためにこの地で命をなげうった人々の最後の安息の地として，その戦場の一角を捧げるために集まりました．それは私たちにとって，全くもってふさわしく，また理にかなった行ないであります．
しかし，より大きな意味では，私たちがこの土地を捧げることはできません．この土地を聖別したり，神に捧げたりすることはできません．この地で奮闘した勇敢な人々こそが，生きている方々も戦死した方々も含め，すでにこの地を聖別しているのです．それに付け加えたり，差し引いたりすることは私たちの貧弱な力の及ぶところではないのです．私たちがここで話すことは世界の耳目を引くこともなく，やがて忘れ去られることでしょう．しかし，彼らがこの地でなしたことは，永遠に世界の記憶に留められるのです．この地で戦った人々がこれまで気高くも進めてきた未完の仕事を完遂するために，私たち生きている者は，むしろ自らの身を捧げるべきなのです．
私たちの前には大いなる責務が残されています．名誉ある戦死者たちが最後まで完全に身を捧げた大義のために，私たちも一層の献身をもってあたること．これらの戦死者たちの死を無駄にしないと高らかに決意すること．神の導きのもと，この国に自由の新たなる誕生をもたらすこと．そして，人民の，人民による，人民のための政府をこの地上から絶やさないことこそが，私たちが身を捧げるべき大いなる責務なのです．
国民が、納得できる政治。民主主義の原点と言われる演説です。
