Each year, Halloween is gaining popularity in Japan. Many young adults gather and wear costumes. They attend parties and events in clubs and bars in major cities such as Tokyo and Osaka. However, some people simply gather on the street for drinking. Last year, the party got a bit out of control in Tokyo, and the police had to step in. I wonder how it will be this year.
In the 7 years I have lived in Osaka, I have enjoyed going downtown to Shinsaibashi to enjoy drinking, dancing, and taking pictures with friends and strangers in our costumes. Some people buy costumes, and some people make them themselves. Some of the creativity is amazing! Last year, I saw a group of about 5 friends dressed in homemade costumes that were famous sites in Osaka. One person was Taro Okamoto’s Tower of the Sun and another was dressed as the Ebisu Tower Ferris Wheel! It must have taken a long time to make.
In America, adults sometimes go to costume parties. These parties often take place in homes or clubs. However, Halloween is actually a children’s day in the U.S. Kids dress up and go from door to door, knocking, and saying “trick or treat.” They can get candy. This culture hasn’t made its way to Japan yet.
Anyway, throughout my time here, I’ve dressed up as a maid, an alien, a unicorn, Misa Amane from Death note, and more… What is my costume this year? Well, it’s something that has gained a lot of popularity this year in Japan. TAPIOCA MILK TEA! Or as we say in English, “bubble tea.”
(There is also a headpiece I made to look like a straw that isn't pictured.)
I'm looking forward to dressing up and going out all night tonight! Everyone have a fun and safe Halloween!
