toは「方向＋到達」が基本です。その広がりを見て行きましょう。
○「到達」のto
The leaves fell to the ground.（枯れ葉が地面に落ちた 「地面に到達」)
His effort led him to success. (努力が彼を成功に導いた。「成功に到達」)
○「与える」to
He gave a nice present to his aunt.（彼はおばさんにすてきなプレゼントをあげた。 あげたプレゼントは当然相手に「到達」します。）
○「付着」のto
attach label to the bottle ( ラベルを瓶に貼り付ける。「瓶に到達して→くっつく」）
( The label ( ) the bottle is beautiful. 〈瓶に着いているラベルはきれいだ。ならば初めから「付着」していて、「向かう」感じはないので on になります。
○「程度」のto
His business succeeded to a great extent.
（彼の仕事は大変成功した。すごい程度「extent」まで「到達」。）
○「合わせる」to
She danced to the music.（彼女は音楽に合わせて踊った。「付着」と同様、向かって音楽に「ついて」いる感じです。）
○「結果」のto
To our surprise, his reckless attempt succeeded.〈驚いたことに、彼の無謀な計画は成功した。成功したことが→我々の驚きに「至った」のが結果です。）
He studied hard for the purpose of passing the test.
〈彼は試験に通るためによく勉強した。は「これから求める」目的なのでfor the purpose of ですが、He made a great effort, but to no purpose.〈彼はすごく努力したが、無駄だった。は、すでに「到達した結果」なのでtoとなります。
「動き」＋「到達」で結構すっきり理解できるのがto。
