アラスカの氷河
Glacier in Alaska
アラスカに２−３ヶ月住めたことは
とてもラッキーだと思う。スケールの大きい
大自然と向き合うのは、日常のこと。
I feel lucky that I could spend a few months in Alaska.
You will witness the greatness of nature in daily life there.
知り合いが、今日は氷河に行こうか、と
気軽に誘ってくれた。
A friend told me one day that we should go to visit a glacier.
その時まで、氷河なんていうものは
地球の果てのどこかにあって、
一生見ることのないものだと思っていた。
Until that time, glacier was something that existed at the end of the world, some farthest place on earth that I would not see in my life time.
だから大きな川のような氷の塊の上を
歩いているのはとても不思議な気がした。
That is why it was like a miracle that I was standing on top of a glacier.
スケールの大きさにも圧倒された。
I was overwhelmed by the scale of the glacier, first.
でも、この氷河は氷河期からあるものだ、
そしてだんだんと低い方へと動いている、と
説明された時には、ただ呆然とした。
But then, my friend explained that this glacier was formed during the ice age and the glacier keeps moving downwards!
↑これは別の機会で見たオーロラ
だいたい氷河期とはどのくらい前なのか。
そんなスケールで時間を考えたことも
なかった。それに氷河がまるで生き物の
ように動いている、というのも
なんとも不思議だった。
Well, how many years ago was that ice age??? I never had an idea of the time scale so grande! And I could not grasp the idea that the glacier was moving.
そう言われると、足の下にある氷の川が
少しづつ動いているような気がして
おかしかった。
But after some time, I felt that the glacier under my feet was slowly moving, which made me laugh.
こういう時には
つくづく人間の小ささを感じる。
人間は素晴らしい。でもこの宇宙の中で
いかに小さな存在かも知っていた方が
いいと思う。
I felt, how small human existence is!
Humans are wonderful; however, it would be also wise to know that we are a very small part of this infinite universe.
小さなこと、どうでもいいことばかりに
気を取られて生きるのはやめようと思った。
この途方もなく大きな「なにか」を
知りたい。
I stopped worrying about small and trivial things.
I became so curious and eager to know about this "something beyond."
知ることができなかったとしても、
この壮大な宇宙のドラマの中で
生きていることの喜びを忘れたくない、と
その日誓った。
Or I thought, even I can't comprehend, at least I don't want to forget the joy of living within this supreme universal drama.
That is what I swore that day.
