今年は、大戦中に特攻兵器が使用され始めた昭和19（1944）年から八十周年にあたる。空の神風と並んで知られているのが、海の回天特攻隊であったが、山口県徳山沖の大津島には現在も、その練習基地の施設が一部残されている。小生は18年前の2006年6月に同島を訪れている。島には、回天特攻記念館や特攻隊員の慰霊碑もある。一つ残念に思ったのは、訓練基地跡が釣り場になっていて、多くの釣り人が釣り糸を垂れていたこと。英霊がかつて訓練に勤しんだ場所は静謐にしておいてほしかった。（Training Facilities for Suicide Torpedo Crew at Otsushima Is.: This year marks the 80th anniversary of the initiation of various suicide attacks in 1944 during World War II by the Imperial Japanese forces. Along with KAMIKAZE [lit., "divine wind"] aerial attacks by planes, suicide torpedo named KAITEN [lit., "heaven shaker"] is notable as underwater equivalent of KAMIKAZE. On the island of Otsushima off Tokuyama City in Yamaguchi Prefecture, one can still see what used to be training facilities for prospective KAITEN crewmen. I visited the island in June 2006--some 18 years ago. Besides KAITEN-related relics, one can also visit a memorial hall and monument dedicated to the spirits of fallen KAITEN crewmen, One regrettable scene for me was that many people were fishing at and around these facilities. I wish the location, where those fallen servicemen engaged in training for their one-way mission, had been kept in tranquil atmosphere.)

徳山から渡って辿り着いた大津島。
少し歩くと見えてくる回天訓練基地跡
このトンネルを通って回天が運ばれていった。よく見れば、レールの跡が。
記念碑。短い一文ですが、読んで思わず涙が滲みます。
金網で囲まれた訓練施設の跡。
やや朽ちかけている部分もありましたが、
保存状態は良かったようです。
流石にこの箇所にはいませんでしたが、他の場所には結構な釣り人がいて、複雑な気持ちにさせられました。
当時は、ここに門があって、今は蝶番だけが残されています。
