かつて北海道と本州との交通は、函館と青森間を航行する青函連絡船が主役を担っていた。1988年に青函トンネルが開業すると同時に、国鉄（後のJR）と直結して運行されていた連絡船は廃止されるも、自動車による渡航手段としての船舶交通の需要は止まず、1972年から函館・青森間の貨物・車両運送を担ってきた道南自動車フェリー株式会社が、2000年に旅客事業に参入。2009年に会社名を津軽海峡フェリーに改めた。連絡船当時は五時間近くかかっていた航行時間は、現在運航されている函館・青森間の津軽海峡フェリーでは四時間を切っている。一方、フェリーターミナルが函館・青森双方ともＪＲの駅とは離れていることが、徒歩で乗下船する小生のような旅行者にとっては難点である。昨年十月、東京から札幌に帰る際に小生は、夜行の長距離バスと津軽海峡フェリーの乗車・乗船券とがセットになった券を利用し、津軽海峡フェリーに初めて乗ることとなり、1987年に青函連絡船に乗って以来、実に三十六年ぶりに津軽海峡を船で渡った。天気が良く、陸奥湾、海峡、函館山などの眺望を楽しむことができた。（Tsugaru Strait Ferry, boarded Oct. 9 last year: Ferry-boat route between Hakodate in southern Hokkaido [Japan's northernmost island] and Aomori located in the north of Honshu [Japan's main island] used to be a trunk transportation line connecting Hokkaido and Honshu. Upon the completion of undersea railway tunnel between the two islands in 1988, Japan National Railways [JNR, currently Japan Railways or JR] discontinued the ferry service. Since 1972, a shipping company had operated cargo and vehicle transportation services across the Tsugaru Strait [channel between Hokkaido and Honshu]. That company started passenger transporation service in 2000, and renamed itself Tsugaru Strait Ferry in 2009. Currently, the company's ships sail between Hakodate and Aomori in less than four hours--about one hour faster than the now defunct JNR-operated ferry service. A drawback--for passengers not riding vehicles like me--is that the terminal in both ports is located far away from train station. As for me, I had an opportunity to get on board a ship of this strait-crossing liner on October 9 last year on my way back from Tokyo to Sapporo--I was able to purchase a ticket combining a long-distance night bus ride from Tokyo to Aomori and a ferry trip from Aomori to Hakodate. It was my first voyage on board the Tsugaru Strait Ferry ship, and the first trip across the strait in 36 years since my last such trip using the old JNR-operated ship in 1987. Under a fine weather, I could enjoy seeing splended landscapes such as the Bay of Mutsu around the port of Aomori, the strait, and Mt. Hakodate close to the port of Hakodate.）
