桶川の史跡、十月三日探訪（１）：埼玉県桶川市は江戸時代、中山道の宿場町として栄えた。江戸の日本橋から約四十キロの距離にあるこの宿場町は文久元（1861）年、皇女和宮が江戸に下向する際に宿泊した場所であり、その際には三万人に上る人々がここに集結したと言われる。街中には宿場町の名残を幾つか見ることができる。天保七（1836）年に建てられた道標、江戸時代末期から明治期にわたって建てられた古民家などである。（Historical Sites in Okegawa, Saitama Pref., visited Oct. 3: Okegawa City in Saitama Prefecture was a major lodging town for travelers during the Tokugawa Period [1600-1868]. Located about 40 kilometers to the north of Edo--today's Tokyo--it served as one of the relay stations on a major highway of the time named Nakasendo, which passed through the inland area of cental Japan. When Emperor Komei's sister went to Edo from Japan's ancient capital of Kyoto in 1861 to marry the Shogun of the Tokugawa warrior government, she and her entourage stayed here. Some 30,000 people reportedly gathered in this town on that occasion. Today, one can see some historical sites reminiscent of that period. Among them are a stone road sign and some old houses dating back to the mid-19th to early 20th century. *Note: the marriage between the emperor's sister and shogun in 1861 was the result of engineering by some leaders of the warrior government to bolster the waning influence of their rule.）
