YOSAKOIソーラン回顧、2017年（その１）JR九州櫻燕隊、粋～IKI～北海学園大学：金正男が暗殺された年、2017年。その年の六月十日は雨模様の一日だったと記憶しています。まず、JR九州職員で構成されるJR九州櫻燕隊の札幌駅南口広場会場での演舞。櫻をあしらった女性の踊り子の衣装と、燕を彷彿させる制服まがいの男性の衣装は定番となっています。次は（恐らく）新琴似会場での粋～IKI～北海学園大学。こちらは、祭りをテーマにした定番の演舞でした。（YOSAKOI-Soran in memories, 2017[Part 1]: JR Kyushu Ou-en-tai, Iki-Iki Hokkai Gakuen University: it was rainy on this day, i.e., June 10, 2017--the year when Kim Jong-Nam was assassinated in Malaysia. The first seven images are snap shots of stage performance at a square close to JR Sapporo Station's southern entrance by JR Kyushu Ou-en-tai--a team composed of employees of JR [Japan Railway] Kyushu [*Note: Kyushu is the southernmost island of Japan, while Hokkaido, the capital city of which is Sapporo, is the northernmost.] OU-EN-TAI, which is transcribed 櫻燕隊 as their team name, literally means "cherry flower/swallow unit." Obviously, the first symbol 櫻[cherry flower] refers to the pattern dyed on female dancer's outfit, the second symbol 燕[swallow] the outlook of male member's costume modelled on the JR employee's uniform. Native Japanese speakers, however, usually think of 応援隊--meaning "cheer leading unit--as a normal transcription of OU-EN-TAI. Thus, their team name carries an implication of "JR Kyushu support unit."
