北海道最北端への旅（１１）北海道北端岬巡り：礼文島から稚内に戻った翌日、昨年十月十四日は、生憎の曇天であったが、まず、日本最北端の駅であるJR稚内駅へ。それから、北海道北端の岬二つをバスで探訪。まずは、宗谷岬。史家として見逃してならないのが、1902年に日露戦争を予期して建てられた望楼。当時は日本の各所に同様な望楼が立てられましたが、ここ宗谷岬にあるのは、現存する数少ない望楼の一つ。近くには、日本最北端の灯台である宗谷岬灯台や、大韓航空機撃墜事件の慰霊碑、日本最北端の碑などがあります。（Trip to the northernmost of Japan's northernmost island[11]visits to two capes in northern Hokkaido; the weather on October 14 last year--the day after my return from the Island of Rebun to the city of Wakkanai--was unfortunately cloudy. My first destination on this day was the JR[Japan Railways]Wakkanai Station--the northernmost railway station in Japan. Thereafter, I went to two capes in this area by bus. The first one I visited was Cape Soya. As a historian, I could not miss a watch tower build in 1902 immediately before the Russo-Japanese War [1904-05]. Among such watch towers that were built at many locations in Japan then, this is one of the few still preserved today. In its vicinity, one can find a light house--the northernmost light house in Japan--and some monuments, including a memorial for the ill-fated passengers of the Korean Airlines jet downed by a Soviet fighter in 1983, and a landmark indicating the northernmost point in Japan.）

曇っていましたが、薄っすらと樺太が見えたような気がしました。
