前回、「日本の敗北」の監訳者の訳が不適であることを既に述べておいたが、その理由は明白であろう。
「日本の敗北」としてしまったら、昭和20年8月15日の終戦に至るまでの経緯がそこに記されているものを読者は判断してしまうであろうが、上記に抜粋した例文から分かるように、そうではない。内容は、1945年初頭頃の日本が既に敗戦が決定的となったにも拘らず、和平への道筋を付けられない状況を記述したものである。
この後に続く見出しからも、そのことは明白であろう。著者は、この後に「1945年の枢軸国の戦略」、「ヨーロッパ戦の終結」を論じているのである。
要するに、この部分で著者が論じていたのは、日本の敗北が決定的となっていたにも拘らず、降伏を肯んじなかった状況、そして、同じことがドイツでも起きていたことである。
そういった点を勘案して小生は、元の訳で「敗戦に向かう日本」としておいたが、如何であろう？
訳していると、往々にして「木を見て森を見ざる」こととなるが、監訳者となれば、一文一文に拘らず全体を俯瞰できる立場にあるし、そうでなければならないが、この監訳者がそういった役割を全く果していなかったのは遺憾千万である。
