<意味>
～を免責する/～を保障する
＊「～(人)を，損害を受けない状態にしておく」という意味(原義)であるが、契約書では、通例、「～を免責する」「～を保障する」(将来生じ得る損害や損失を一方当事者に与えないように保障する)という意味で用いる。

The law has held the manufacturers harmless for misuses of the products by consumers. →その法律は消費者による製品の誤用に対して製造業者に免責を与えている。
Before we purchase the boat, we should add a clause to the sales contract specifying the seller has agreed to hold us harmless and indemnify us against any claim that will occur in the future. →私たちは、そのボートを購入する前に、将来起こりうるあらゆる請求から私たちを免責することに売主が同意したことを明示する条項を売買契約書に追加するべきだ。
