今回は旅行関連の話題に触れてみたいと思います。

Good morning.
Okay, Ms.Rider, can you tell us what the latest trend in travel is?
Well, trips to all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean are still popular.
But more and more of our customers -- and this is an international trend -- are asking about adventure travel opportunities.
Is that anything like ecotourism?
Well, they're definitely related. Ecotourism is usually done in some unusual or exotic location, and often involves some kind of outdoor activity. Still, it's at the softer end of the adventure travel spectrum, while adventure travel per se is more often...um...associated with more physically challenging or maybe high-risk activities in some pretty wild areas of the world.
Wow, that sounds great. Could you give me and, um, our listeners some examples?
Sure. An ecotour could be bird watching in Costa Rica or hot-air ballooning over the Alps, or even a cruise to Antarctica. Some of the recent packages, I mean, the real adventure travel packages I've arranged recently include things like sea kayaking along the coast of Alaska, gorilla trekking in Africa, and rock...um...rock climbing in the Himalayas.
That sure sounds exotic.
Yeah, it certainly is, I guess.
But isn't all this just like, you know, another form of "roughing it"?
Well, I guess you could say that, but no, not really. Adventure travelers still want some comforts -- and they're willing to pay for them. I mean, they might not mind something like, um, climbing up a windy mountain, or something like a recent trip I arranged where they were hiking up an active volcano, or whatever, but you can bet that they want to have a bottle of good wine and a nice comfortable bed waiting for them when they're finished.
Do you think this adventure travel trend is just a fad?
No, no, I don't think so. Of course, it's all tied in to the "looking good, healthy living" physical fitness movement in North America, but the adventure travel trend is not just, um, temporary; the travel industry as a whole is expecting huge growth in this sector of the market. In fact, not only are there travel agents now that deal exclusively in adventure travel, people training to be travel agents are being given special courses in it.
It certainly sounds like the travel industry is very prepared to deal with this new breed of customer. Okay, the big question now is do you have any trips, any interesting trips coming up sometime soon?
Oh, yes, definitely! I'm finalizing arrangements now for an archeological dig in the sahara Desert, that's in Africa, of course, and next month we're offering a white water rafting expedition in the Canadian Artic. And next week, I'll be going myself to the Galapagos Islands to swim with the seals there.
That all sounds very exciting. I think I'm catching the travel bug! Thank you for those suggestions, and for coming along today to join us.

そうですね、カリブ海のリゾート地で楽しむ色々なサービスのついたパッケージ旅行は相変わらずの人気を誇っています。でもお客様がますます増えているのは世界的な傾向もあるかもしれませんが、アドベンチャートラベルに参加したいという問い合わせですね。
エコツーリズムのようなものですか？
そうですね。もちろん関係はあります。エコツーリズムは大抵珍しいエキゾチックな場所で行われ、よく何らかのアウトドア活動を伴うものです。でもどちらかと言えばアドベンチャートラベルの領域では穏やかな方で、アドベンチャーとラベル自体はもっと・・・あの・・・その・・・・肉体的なチャレンジと結びついていたり、世界中のかなり未開の地で大きな危険を伴う活動をしたりします。
まぁそうなんですか？そうですね・・・まず私よりも・・・インタビューを聴いている皆さんにいくつか例をあげて頂けますか？
判りました。エコツアーには、コスタリカでのバードウォッチングやアルプス山脈を熱気球で越える旅とか、南極大陸へのクルーズなどがありますね。最近のパッケージ物・・・つまり、最近私が手がけた本物のアドベンチャートラベルにはアラスカ沿岸のシーカヤッキングとか、アフリカでのゴリラ観察トレッキングとか、ヒマラヤ山脈でのロック・・・えっと・・・あの・・・その・・・ロッククライミングがありますね。
それは確かにエキゾチックですね。
えぇ。たしかにそうだと思います。
でもこれはただの「原始的生活」の別の形のような感じではないかしら？
そうですね。そうとも言えるかもしれません・・・でも・・・実はそうでもないです。アドベンチャートラベルをする人達は快適さもやはり求められていて、そのためなら進んでお金を出します。つまり彼らは・・・えっと・・・あの・・・その・・・風が吹き荒れる山を登ったり、私が最近手配した旅行でも活火山にハイキングで登ったり、どんな事も一向に気にはしないんですけど、活動を終えて帰って来ると、美味しいワインが一本あったり快適なベッドがあったりしたらいいと思っている事はたしかだと思います。
このアドベンチャートラベルは単なる流行だと思いますか？
いいえ。そうは思わないです。もちろん北アメリカの「格好よく健康に」と言ったフィットネス指向としっかり繋がっていますが、アドベンチャーとラベルを求める傾向はただの・・・えっと・・・その・・・・一時的なものではないです。旅行業界全体が市場のこの分野で大きな成長を見込んでいます。実際に今では、アドベンチャートラベルを専門に扱う旅行エージェントがいますし、旅行会社に勤務するエージェント達がそのために特別コースを受講させられたりします。
旅行産業がこの新しい客層に対応するために、まさに準備が出来ている感じがするのは間違いなさそうですね。わかりました。それではここで大事な質問ですが、近々行われる予定の面白い旅行はありますか？
ええ、もちろんです！今手続きが最終段階に入っているのはサハラ砂漠の考古学発掘調査です。これはもちろんアフリカのものですが、来月は北極圏カナダで急流ラフティングをします。そして来週は私自身がアザラシと一緒に泳ごうとガラパゴス諸島へ行く予定です。
わくわくするような話ばかりですね。私も旅行の虫がうずいてきます！今日はお越し頂いて色々ためになるお話を有難う御座いました。
