Statistically, we know that defensive uses of firearms to prevent and/or halt a crime and possibly save a life are far more common than the instances you cite. Once again, I will reiterate that the cops themselves are overwhelmingly on my side on this issue.
I love the idea of empowering people. It is actually less risky than the alternative.

But even as stuff like this does occur, this is why (as I stated in the article) you should train extensively with your firearm. I'm not an advocate of just buying a gun without training. Lots of classes are offered at very affordable rates to teach anyone how this is done.
Things like understanding how to conceal carry will go a long way to prevent people from taking your gun from you.

アメリカ人の「銃への依存」の根底には、「他人への不信感」がある。人種や民族がごちゃごちゃになって、カオス状態になっている場所だからこその、結果だろうと思う。
驚くべきことなのだが、アメリカ人にとって、基本的に、「見知らぬ他人」というものは、「いつ自分を襲ってくるかわからない存在」、ということのようなのである。
そういう考え方があったうえで、「自分を守るためには、どうしても銃が必要だ」というふうに、なる。
もちろん、銃反対派も、いる。
いるけれども、たぶん、それは、アメリカの多数派ではない。
実際に、銃規制は、一進一退で、進んでいない。
アメリカ人が、銃に依存していても、別にいいのだが、問題は「その生き方」が、「アメリカの外での行動」にまで、関係している、ということなのだ。
この根深い他人不信と、「自衛のためには武装しなければ」という考え方が、アメリカの外交方針や、国の外での軍事行動へと、つながっているというふうに、私は考えている。
国民がそういうふうでなければ、そこの軍隊が、外国へ出かけて行って、破壊の限りを尽くすということは、できない。
「私は自殺はしないから、関係ない」
そして、自殺についての「楽観的な考え方」というものも、明らかになった。確かに、キリスト教の影響の強い場所では、自殺は少なくなる。
が、数年前に、あるアメリカの俳優の甥っ子が、鬱病の末、銃で自殺をした際、その俳優が、「銃さえなければ」と言って、銃規制派に転身したという件が、あったばかりである。
そういうことがあっても、圧倒的多数のアメリカ人には、「自殺は他人ごと」であって、「自分は自殺をしないから、無関係」というふうに、軽く考えている。
今はそう思っていても、何かがあって、重い鬱状態になれば、考え方は、変わっている可能性が、大なのだが、そして、手元に銃があったら、使ってしまうかもしれないのだが、彼らは、そういうふうには考えない。
そういう感じである。
関心度の高さ
そして、「銃問題」についてのアメリカ人の「関心」というのは、異様に高い。この記事なんかも、みるみるコメント数が伸びて、現時点で1500コメントを超えている。
いっぽうで、同時期に投稿した私のスレッド（Have you ever been thanked by anyone foreign for deploying your military overseas?＝外国への軍隊の駐留について、誰か外国人から感謝されたことはありますか）は、49コメントで、これ以上たぶん増えない。
関心がないのである。
