There's some point of view I can offer.
Certain time ago, there was an idea justifying a suicidal attack in my country.
Americans in those days were utterly shocked, must have mulled over it, wondering how to defang the idea, so to get us less threatening.
After the defeat, Americans came in, and tried to remove the "dangerous idea" to enable suicidal attack.
They set a law to strictly divide state affairs and religion.
Funny thing is the Americans didn't remove two most important features like Emperor, and his divine shrine to worship the war dead heroes.
Also MacArthur forgave many bureaucrats, in hiring many of them as CIA agents, those elites guilty in conducting war and aggression.
Time passed and in 1970, there was no one who wanted to surrender "life" anymore, for a divine fight when some fanatic author attempted a failed coup in a Jieitai camp.
He was alleging resurgence of the lost empire.
However, Americans had apparently succeeded in the defanging operation of Japan.
Why was that possible?
Anyways, my analysis is that it was not because we were feeling any sympathy or favor on Americans, not because feeling specific aversion on the past regime either.
People were just starved before, too poor to go on.
And when Americans came in and decades or so passed, people found themselves eating so so enough.
Then unlike before, started refusing to surrender life when asked to join a "sacred battle" for independence.
That is it, not anything else.

America also employed vast amounts of munitions, incendiaries, and even two atomic bombs to 'defang' Imperial Japan, don't forget or omit that. It would take something similar to 'defang' Islam, at least in terms of approach, if not scale.

It is one thing to 'defang' or enlighten a country which had a central figure such as the Emperor of Japan. Removal of the Emperor was considered too large a step. It's another thing to try to change a decentralized a large religious belief with so many opinions. eg. Sunni-Shia conflict. I wish that religion could modernized as Japan has. Incidentally Judaism has also undergone similar changes as has Japan and Christianity.
