"Japan is not the US after all"
Yes we are not the suzerain, but its colony.
Shinzo Abe is a "blue blooded puppet" of the suzerain sinse his GRANDFATHER's age.
What he's doing is FAR from what we ordinary citizens hope for.
What we want is just to have NO TROUBLE, to have good relationship with every country in the region, so to be a citizen of a country where its citizen is welcomed in anywhere in the region, making a life without a worry for war.

It was firstly an aspiration of the people those sacrificed for the glory of imperial Japan, inside or outside Japan.
Survived people and we the people of late generation generally have such aspiration seeking peace, while taking on the role to do things instead of the dead people who can't make it come true on their own anymore.
It feels to me very deplorable to see current move in my country, of the people those against war, showing nothing to "do things instead of the dead" while we should.
For instance, some young woman, tweeted like this, "I joined the demo today so to tell my unseen child sometime in the future, as 'Your mother ever joined an anti-war demo for your sake'" she can tell so, if only she mentioned about the dead people FIRST. It made me some frowned.
It's not actually Shogun Glory because the people who ran the imperial Japan were the people mostly coming from lower, local Bushi class, who got down Tokugawa Shogun regime, Bakufu, so later they spared no effort to degrade the prior regime which they brought down, as much as they could.

The other reason is because of pride. It is hard to criticize the dead especially of their own, even in the hearts of the people, they know those war criminals had brought Japan to its knees ending up with the destruction of two Japanese cities.
Such pride is only human. The blame is squarely on the heads of the Leaders. If they truly care about Japanese people who aspire to enjoy long lasting peace, then the government has to take initiative to cleanse it's past so Japan can move on down the peaceful path. When the leaders do that, the Japanese people would be happy to follow because that is what they want - lasting peace.
Unfortunately, the radical rightist group headed by Abe is doing the opposite. That brings the war closer to Japan's door steps while the specter of humiliating defeat and unconditional surrender with massive amount of death of Japanese civilians are still fresh in Japanese people's conscience.
Abe expressed his willingness to "Patrol" the SCS to Obama when Sino-Japan dispute is somewhere else (ECS), it has nothing to do with SCS. Such an unfriendly act is hardly appreciated by China. Abe's ambition is much larger. The Fox has been hiding its tail, now it is showing. Brace for more.
