Most Chinese Say Their Military Can Crush America in Battle | The National Interest Blog
It is not the weapons that China has that are superior to US weapons. They are not. The article just does not get it right what the Chinese are thinking. Chinese are good in defense, not offense. This should be quite clear from its history. The Japanese are good in offense, although they prefer to exercise it in rather sneaky manners as everyone knows. The Chinese can make defense stretched to unbelievable length of time, even with huge losses. At the beginning of the second Sino-Japanese war, from 1937, the Japanese believed they can conquer China in three months. It ended up fighting the Chinese for eight years until 1945 without subjugating the Chinese. The Chinese fought with far inferior weapons, being an agrarian society then, while Japan was already well industrialized by 1937. Some argued that without the US, China might have been unable to stand for long and faced ultimate defeat and surrender. However this theory may not be correct if we look at the Vietnam war. The US was kicked out of Vietnam if not actually defeated by a far inferior army. Given the size of China, the Japanese would have great difficulties in fighting in China, with the extended supply lines, and the CCP was good in gorilla warfare, against a much better equipped army.

ともかく、ベトナム戦争を見れば、そういう議論は正しくないということがわかる。
もしもアメリカが、実際には敗けていなかったとするならば、それでも、はるかに劣った（ベトナムの）軍隊に追い出されたということは事実だ。
中国のサイズを考えれば、日本は中国と戦うのにものすごく苦労しただろう、補給線が伸びきって、さらに中国共産党は、軍備に優った相手に対するゲリラ戦（訳者註：ゲリラのスペルミスと思われる）が得意だ。
What the Chinese are saying, or thinking, to the survey is that they are ready to engage in a long arduous defense, against Japan or the US, even with inferior weapons, or nuclear weapons if need be, to protect sovereignty and territorial integrity this time, for China, because there is no way that China will suffer again from foreign aggression. This is not about the CCP anymore, this is about the Chinese people speaking out for their destiny and survival on the issue of winning the next big fight, if any. Given the lessons of the Vietnam war and the Korean war, they are much more confident that they will survive the next ordeal.

これはもう、共産党がどうとかいう問題じゃない、中国人が自分たちの運命と生存をかけて、次の戦いには勝つという意志表明をしているということなんだ、もしも次の戦争があるのなら。
ベトナム戦争と朝鮮戦争を教訓に、（中国人は）次の苦難を耐え抜く自信を、非常に強く持っている。
