Japanese Instrument of Surrender
We, acting by command of and in behalf of the Emperor of Japan, the Japanese Government and the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters, hereby accept the provisions set forth in the declaration issued by the heads of the Governments of the United States, China, and Great Britain on 26 July 1945 at Potsdam, and subsequently adhered to by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which four powers are hereafter referred to as the Allied Powers.
We hereby proclaim the unconditional surrender to the Allied Powers of the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters and of all Japanese Armed Forces and all Armed Forces under Japanese control wherever situated.
We hereby command all Japanese forces wherever situated and the Japanese people to cease hostilities forthwith, to preserve and save from damage all ships, aircraft, and military and civil property, and to comply with all requirements which may be imposed by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers or by agencies of the Japanese Government at his direction.
We hereby command the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters to issue at once orders to the commanders of all Japanese forces and all forces under Japanese control wherever situated to surrender unconditionally themselves and all forces under their control.
We hereby command all civil, military, and naval officials to obey and enforce all proclamations, orders, and directives deemed by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers to be proper to effectuate this surrender and issued by him or under his authority; and we direct all such officials to remain at their posts and to continue to perform their non-combatant duties unless specifically relieved by him or under his authority.
We hereby undertake for the Emperor, the Japanese Government, and their successors to carry out the provisions of the Potsdam Declaration in good faith, and to issue whatever orders and take whatever action may be required by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers or by any other designated representative of the Allied Powers for the purpose of giving effect to that declaration.
We hereby command the Japanese Imperial Government and the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters at once to liberate all Allied Prisoners of War and civilian internees now under Japanese control and to provide for their protection, care, maintenance, and immediate transportation to places as directed.
The authority of the Emperor and the Japanese Government to rule the State shall be subject to the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, who will take such steps as he deems proper to effectuate these terms of surrender.

日本の降伏文書
われわれは 天皇陛下のご命令のもと、また陛下と、日本政府と、大本営の代理人として、ここにおいて、米国、中国、イギリスのそれぞれの政府の代表たちがポツダムにおいて1945年7月26日に発した規定と、その後にソビエトが付け加えた条項を受諾し、今後は、この４強を、連合国軍とみなす。
われわれはここに、日本帝国大本営と、すべての日本の武装勢力と、日本の支配下にあるすべての場所における武装勢力について、改めて、連合国軍への無条件降伏を行う。
われわれはここに、あらゆる場所におけるすべての日本の武装勢力と日本国民に対し、すべての船や、飛行機や、軍と市民の財産が被害を免れて保存されるために、さらに連合国最高司令官や司令部から日本政府へ下される、すべての要求に従うために、直ちに敵対行為をやめるように命ずる。
われわれはここに、大本営に対し、すべての日本の武装勢力と、日本の支配下にあるすべての場所における武装勢力に対して、直ちに自らと自らが指揮する武装勢力に無条件降伏をさせるよう、命令を下すように発布する。
われわれはここに、すべての市民（ここでは非武装の国民を指す）、陸軍と海軍の将校に対し、この降伏を有効なものとするために連合国軍最高司令官や、彼や彼の当局者から発されたと思われるあらゆる命令に従い、これを進めるように命ずる；さらにわれわれは、彼（連合国軍最高司令官）や彼の当局者から特別な指示がない限りは、すべての将校が持ち場に残って非武装義務を果たすことを指導する。
われわれはここに、天皇陛下と、日本政府と、（以降の文言は「後継政府」にかかっている）ポツダム宣言の規定を忠実に実行することとなる予定であり、連合国軍最高司令官や、連合国軍から任命されたほかの代表者からこの宣言を有効なものとするために出されるいかなる指示にも従い、どんな行動を要求されても引き受けることとなる後継政府の代理となって請け負う。
われわれはここに、日本帝国政府と、大本営に対し、日本の支配下におけるすべての連合国軍の捕虜と監禁されている非武装市民を解放し、彼らに保護を与え、面倒を見て、世話をし、指示された場所にすみやかに送り届けるように命ずる。
天皇陛下と日本政府が日本を統治する権限は、この降伏の条件を達成するための適切な手段を彼の判断によって実行することとなる、連合国軍最高司令官に従属するべきものとする。
