Spotted something dart under the units when you flicked the kitchen light on? Before you panic-clean the whole house, here's what actually matters about cockroaches in UK homes, kept short.

1. It's not just a "dirty home" problem

This is the myth worth dropping first. Cockroaches aren't a verdict on how clean you are. They come in on deliveries, cardboard boxes, second-hand appliances and through shared walls in flats. Any home with warmth, food traces and a way in can get them.

2. The German cockroach

The small, tan one, usually 12–15mm, that loves kitchens and bathrooms. It squeezes behind fridges, kettles, dishwashers and cupboards, anywhere warm and close to food. This is the species behind most UK home infestations, and it breeds fast.

3. The Oriental Cockroach

Bigger, darker, almost black, and happier in cooler, damper spots: drains, basements, under sinks and around bins. You'll often see these come up through plugholes and gullies. Slower-breeding than the German, but a strong sign of a moisture or drainage issue.

4. Why they matter

Cockroaches walk through drains and waste, then over your surfaces and food, spreading bacteria as they go. They're also a known trigger for asthma and allergies, especially in children, because of the droppings and shed skins they leave behind. It's a genuine hygiene issue, not just an "ugh" moment.

5. Why shop sprays often make it worse

Here's the one that catches people out. Blasting a German cockroach nest with a shop-bought spray tends to scatter them into new areas, and repeated sprays can push them to avoid treated spots altogether. You end up with the problem spread across more of the house than you started with. Getting on top of it properly usually means gel baits and targeted treatment, which is where professional cockroach pest control earns its keep.

How to keep them down

Fix dripping taps and damp spots, keep food sealed and crumbs cleared, empty bins nightly, and seal gaps around pipes and skirting where they travel between rooms or flats.

One sighting in the evening is worth taking seriously, because cockroaches hide by day and you rarely see the full picture. Clear Pest Control treats cockroach problems across the North East and will tell you honestly what you're dealing with.
