Topic 20

Writing Task 1: You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

This table show the average number of journey per person made in England in 2002, and different types of transport and different purpose of journey.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

The table shows that in England in 2002, the most popular mode of transportation was going by car or taxi.

At 641 trips made by this personal form of transport per person on average, it far outranked public transport, the second most popular mode at 68 trips total. Trips made via bike or motorcycle were very few, at just 18 total on average per person. We can see that people needing to go shopping made just under ten times more trips by public transport than by bike. Driving to the grocery store by car was just over one hundred times more popular that by motorcycle. The 68 people who took public transport according to the table did so for all purposes rather evenly. On the other hand, there are great differences among the purpose for car use, with 201 people driving for shopping while only 141 took a car to work.

Overall, the table show that the great majority of preferred transport for people in England is by car or taxi.
