Some people argue that the purpose of zoos/parks is only to entertain people.

What do you think? What other purposes of zoos/parks?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Zoos give people the chance to see exotic animals up close and personal, and many people believe that this will cause people to care about the animals enough to not let them die off. Others disagree, believing that zoos have no greater purpose than entertainment. In my opinion, the primary object of zoos is the study of animals.

When the children are taken to see animals in zoos, they are engaging in an important learning experience. In zoos, we learn about the life cycle of animals, about the diversity of different species and about the geographical locations where each animal comes from. Children can be more than simply entertained at zoos; they learn about the facts of life.

It is true that going to the zoo is an entertaining way to spend an afternoon, but it is very educational as well. Many zoos do research in order to provide a better understanding of wildlife and give endangered species a chance at survival. In learning about exotic animals, children and adults will be more likely to support conservation efforts. Further, they might also become more involved in saving the natural environment once zoo staff describes the habit loss that many of these animals face.

Finally, zoos can act as a facility for saving endangered or mistreated animals or for wildlife study. This role is much more important than establishing zoos simply as tourist attractions to make money. The entertainment value of zoos is just an added benefit, but the real purpose is to learn more about the animals. Many rescued animals are nursed back to health in zoos, and experts are able to gain insight on each species they monitor. This can be very important knowledge for understanding how to help animal species survive in their natural habitats in future.

It is undeniable that zoos entertain people, but this is not their main purpose. The study of animals for conservation and education is the real reason why zoos are so important, as is its role as a sanctuary for rescued animals.
