Hey all readers. I’m Nobuaki Takeuchi, a Japanese university student coming to Hsinchu for joining a 2-month internship organized by AIESEC. I am now working at a community center, 港北社區 and spending time with local elders most of the time. Also, I have classes to teach Japanese and English to local people and there are varieties of students from kids to elders coming to the class. I’m trying to organize classes as fun as possible by using body language, music or some kinds of activities so that they can learn language enjoyably. For example, we had an activity of how to make cranes with Japanese folding papers last week. In Japan crane is a special symbol of peace and health and we have a culture of folding and sending 1,000 cranes when someone get serious sick or we hope for peace at a special ceremony. Though folding crane is a bit complex and difficult, everybody made a beautiful one successfully and I’m so happy to see them enjoying it.
Through the experience of working at a community center and home staying, I’m feeling a very strong connection between local people, which we’ve forgotten in urban life. I’m so thankful of being supported by so many people here and really think I made a right decision to come here. It reminds me of something important in my heart. However, it is also true that I often feel difficulties in communication because of my poor Chinese. I got to study Chinese much harder to get over it and to know them more at first hand.
