In the realm of gifted education, there’s an emphasis on honing the five senses. For example, individuals with a developed sense of taste can easily distinguish between flavors. Similarly, if one holds belief and love for God, they should actively seek, search, and knock to awaken their spiritual senses. A person with a heightened spiritual sense of smell, for instance, is adept at discerning spirits.

While our soul’s senses are perceptible, during sleep, our physical senses fade. As we close our eyes, ears, and mouth, letting our physical senses diminish, God opens our spiritual senses through dreams or visions.

Dreams are the realm over which the soul’s activities span, while visions emerge when our spiritual eyes have been opened. Through fasting, as our physical sensations dwindle to a state of utter lethargy, God opens our spiritual eyes.

Among the spiritual senses, God wishes to open our spiritual ears first, thereby communicating with us.

To unlock our spiritual senses, we must first open our hearts to God. The Bible is replete with instances where God seeks out individuals to awaken their spiritual senses. Take, for example, Samuel under Priest Eli. When Samuel was unaware of God’s voice, God called to him in his sleep, a time when physical senses are dulled, helping him discern that it was indeed God calling. In an era focused on sacrifices and physical worship, God chose to speak to the young Samuel. Thus, Samuel opened his heart to God and sought His word.

The purpose behind God opening our spiritual senses is to empower us to fearlessly proclaim the gospel, affirming His living presence.
