TOEIC920点までの道のり④＆本日の表現(inflict)

僕のTOEIC勉強法について④

つまみ食いしたヒアリング教材は、ざっと、以下のとおり。

① 英語リスニング・クリニック　篠田 顕子 (著)

② 完全版 英語リスニング科学的上達法

③ 話すためのリスニング 中級用

④ これだけで聞ける・話せる UDA式30音でマスターする英会話

このほかにもいろいろあったと思うけど、1冊全てやったのは上記だけだと思う。どれが自分に役に立ったかよくわからないけど、とにかく、Motivationを保って毎日勉強していたことが重要だった。

平均すると毎日2時間ぐらい（電車の中も含めて）は勉強していたと思う。

700点までの推移は、以下のとおり

2001年5月：L340 R245 Total585

やっと700点を超えたけど、社内の英語でのMeetingではほとんど「話せない、聞けない」という状況は続いた。

このブログの題名にもあるけど、「勉強」している限り、TOEICの点数は上がるけど、実践的な英語はできないことに、この後まだまだ気づかない自分でした。

ここから860点までの飛躍的な伸びについては、明日行こう書いていこうと思います！！！お楽しみに！

さて、本日の表現は、Herald Tribune紙のハリケーンKatrinaの記事より。

「But the estimate actually understates Katrina's impact. That's because the property damage in Katrina's direct path, however painful for the region's residents, represents only a small part of the harm inflicted by the hurricane. More significant -- and harder to measure -- is the damage to the national economy caused by soaring energy prices and shipping disruptions.」

今日のテーマは「（損害、苦痛など）を与える、負わせる」です。今回のKatrinaの記事では頻出です。

inflictをロングマン英英辞典より、

-to make someone suffer something bad or painful

（例文）

Parents in these difficult situations may inflict emotional and physical abuse on their children.

類義語としては以下のようなものがある。

1. impose: to have a bad effect on someone or something by causing them problems
（例文） A higher sales tax would impose an unfair burden on poor Americans.

2. deal out: to give someone a punishment
（例文） Chinese courts deal out harsh punishments to strugglers.

3.  wreak: to cause a lot of damage, problems, and suffering
（例文） Hurricane Mitch wreaked havoc along the eastern coast.

こういう出来事のとき以外にも、人に危害を加えるというときにinflictは使えそう。
