ついにクルーグマンがノーベル賞を受賞した。
The age of diminished やらThe Accidental Theorist : And Other Dispatches from the Dismal Science 等で皆さんもご存知の方も多いであろうが、実に面白い経済学者だとは思っていたが、去年たまたま会議で運良く逢う機会があり、笑顔で握手したが、手が実に柔らかい。そして手の感触以上に柔らかいのは彼の頭の中である。実際に逢って見るとおちゃめでシニカルでいたずらっ子のような魅力的な人物である。おそらく頭の中は普通の人の百倍速で高速回転しているのであろう。だからこそ、「筋が通らないこと」や「愚かなこと」「不正」が許せないのであろう。特にブッシュ政策への痛烈な批判が強烈でマグニチュードが大きかった事情は、先の氏のノーベル賞受賞にホワイトハウスが何もコメントしなかったことからも事の複雑さが伺い知れる。
彼は、ニューヨークタイムスのコラムニストとしても有名であるが、今回のサブプライム問題でも早くから警鐘を鳴らす主張を展開してきた。そして、特にブッシュに対して辛口の論評を書き続けてきていた。昨夏の金融危機発生時にも、米政府の危機は間もなく終わるという楽観的な予測や分析の胡散臭さを見事に喝破していた。米ポールソンの危機対策は無茶苦茶であると批判する一方、英ブラウン首相の危機対策は評価できるという高い評価を与えている。
おそらくいま世界が抱えている国際金融危機の処方箋を描くことができれば2個目のノーベル賞をもらえることは間違いないがそんなに簡単でもなかろう。
何？ノーベル賞は水泳の金メダルとは違うって？そりゃ、失礼しました・・・・

Mr. Krugman, 55, a professor at Princeton Univ.in New Jersey and a columnist for The New York Times, formulated a new theory to answer questions about free trade, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.
“What are the effects of free trade and globalization? What are the driving forces behind worldwide urbanization? Paul Krugman has formulated a new theory to answer these questions,” the academy said in its citation.
“He has thereby integrated the previously disparate research fields of international trade and economic geography,” it said.

マサチューセッツ工科大学（準教授、1980 - 1984年。教授、1984 - 1994年ならびに1996 - 2000年）で教鞭をとり、2000年からプリンストン大学教授。貿易の形態と経済活動の配置に関する分析により2008年のノーベル経済学賞を受賞。
Mr. Krugman is the author or editor of 20 books and more than 200 papers in professional journals and edited volumes. His professional reputation rests largely on work in international trade and finance; he is one of the founders of the "new trade theory," a major rethinking of the theory of international trade. In recognition of that work, in 1991 the American Economic Association awarded him its John Bates Clark medal, a prize given every two years to "that economist under forty who is adjudged to have made a significant contribution to economic knowledge." Mr. Krugman's current academic research is focused on economic and currency crises. At the same time, Mr. Krugman has written extensively for a broader public audience. Some of his recent articles on economic issues, originally published in Foreign Affairs, Harvard Business Review, Scientific American and other journals, are reprinted in Pop Internationalism and The Accidental Theorist.
