Shortly after, Holmes was on the run, wanted for insurance fraud. On October 25, 1895 Holmes plead not guilty before a jury of his peers. The jury, however, did not find Holmes convincing and on November 4, 1895 he was found guilty of the murder of Benjamin Pitezel and sentenced to death.
