これもよく使う表現かな？
と思うのですが、
You are looking for a seat in a conference room and you found one seat that looks available.
When you want to make sure if you can sit there by asking,
"Is this seat taken?"
この席は空いていますか？
The person will probably say,
"No, you can sit here."
空いています。どうぞ座ってください。
You could also say,
"Is anyone sitting here?"
"Is this seat open?"
<質問に対する回答例>
Is this seat open?の場合は、直訳の
「空いていますか？」
がそのまま該当するので、空いている場合は、"Yes."と返答がきます。
ただ、下記の場合の回答は、"No."なのです。
Is anyone sitting here?
Is this seat taken?
両方、この席は取られていますか？が直訳となりますので、
「いいえ、誰も座っていません。」といった回答 = Noとなります。
ちょっとややこしいですが、よく使われる表現なので、聞いた時も聞かれた時も、スマート
に応対できるようにしておきましょう
