「紅葉」には２つの読み方と意味があります。一つは紅葉（こうよう）そしてもう一つが紅葉（もみじ）です。紅葉（こうよう）は秋に野山で楓を代表とする落葉樹の葉が紅色や黄色に変わることを指します。紅葉（もみじ）は紅葉（こうよう）が綺麗な楓の中でも葉の形が手の平状に5つ以上切れ込んだものを指します。紅葉（こうよう）する落葉樹がまとまって自生しているのは、東アジアの沿岸部と北アメリカ大陸の東部、ヨーロッパの一部と言われています。日本は国土の凡そ７割が森林で様々な落葉樹が生えており、寒暖差もあるため、至るところで美しい紅葉（こうよう）が楽しめます。特に紅葉（もみじ）として親しまれている楓は中国や朝鮮半島に数種自生しているだけで、それ以外は大半が日本列島にあり、紅葉（もみじ）は正に日本の秋を代表する植物で、全国の行楽地では、紅葉狩りを楽しむ人で賑わいます。
There are two ways to read the word "紅葉". One is "Kohyoh" and the other is "Momiji". "Kohyoh" is autumn leaves and "momiji" is Japanese maple red leaves. Japanese maple red leaves are shaped like a palm of the hand and only the ones with five spikes out of the beautiful maples are called "Momiji". The only places that deciduous trees are naturally grown are coastal area of Eastern Asia, East of Northern America and a part of Europe. About 70% of Japan is a forest and there are various kinds of deciduous trees. Japan has a clear temperature difference, so we can enjoy beautiful leaves almost anywhere around the country. Especially, "Momiji" is not frequently seen anywhere outside of Japan. Some kinds of "Momiji" are grown in China and Korea, but only a few. Because of this, "Momiji" is very special to Japan representing our country. Every autumn we see lots of people appreciating beautiful autumn leaves.
