「世の中に たえて桜のなかりせば 春の心はのどけからまし」平安時代の歌人在原業平が詠んだように、日本人は昔から桜を愛でてきました。日本の桜を代表する染井吉野は、江戸時代に大島桜と江戸彼岸を人工的に交配し作られたと考えられています。染井吉野は種を発芽させて殖やすことが出来ないため、原木から人の手による接木で広まりました。つまり、今咲いている全ての染井吉野は同じ遺伝子を持つクローン桜であり、同一個体であるゆえに多様性がなく一斉に咲き一斉に散ります。今回、上野公園に染井吉野の原木と見られる桜が見つかりました。今まで謎とされていた染井吉野の起源が明らかになるのか注目されます。
As Ariwara-no-Narihira, the old Japanese novel and poet in Heian era, wrote that “If it were not for Cherry blossoms in the world, how peaceful and calm our hearts could be in spring”, Japanese people have loved cherry blossoms since the old times. People think that Somei-Yoshino, the cherry blossoms that represents Japan, are artificially crossbred between Oshimazakura and Edohigan in Edo era. Somei-Yoshino cannot sprout by itself, so people grow them by grafting row wood. Therefore all SWomei-Yoshino blooming now have the same DNA and identical individual without diversity. They all bloom and fall at the same time. This year, the original tree of Somei-Yoshino was found in Ueno Park. People are excited to know about the mysterious history of Somei-Yoshino would be revealed.
