To benefit others without counting oneself is the most essential act of love and compassion .
○ 優しい目、和やかな顔、温かい言葉が、一隅を照らす。
Kind eyes , genial face , warm speech . With just such , one will brighten up a corner .
○ 親は子の年を数えて慈しみ、子は親の年を数えて悲しむ。
The parent in counting the child's age is a figure of compassion .
The child in counting the parent's age is one of sadness .
○ 思いきっていたわりの言葉をかけてみな、その一言で相手も変るし自分も変るから。
Why don't you venture to address one with a kind word .
With such a warm word , one will surely be consoled : and you will also be relieved yourself .
○ 親切なつもり、尽くしているつもり、一生懸命やっているつもり。 つもり違いもあるなぁ。
One purposed kindness . One intended to be of service .
One calculated to be serving with all one's might .
At times , there are occasions such a thing as a miscalculation .
○ 施しは人を救うが、過ぎれば人を駄目にする。
Giving to charity saves people , but it also may spoil people , I dare say .
○ 生きるとはなぁ、いのちを分け合っていくことなんだよ。 だから労わりあっていくんだよ。
To live , I should say , means to share life with all others .
It should be kindly taking a good care of everything each other .

【持戒(じかい)】
◆ 人の海を渡るには必ず船をかるが如く、
若し、生死を渡らんに必ず持戒に因るべし。 最澄
As we use a ship to cross seas ,
so must we rely on morals and precepts to cross the ocean of life and death .
○ まず一日一日己のなすべきことをきちんと果せ。それが人生のたしかな基盤だ。
Do , anyway , try to live for this day firmly with all the efforts .
That is the very basic of human life .
○ 人間として守るべきことを一つでも守っていれば、
ほかのことは自ずから整っていくものだ。
If one can obey just one commandment that , as a human , ought to be followed ,
the other commandments will , to be sure , spontaneously fall in line .
○ 屏風は折れるからたつんだよ。突っ張っているとじきに倒れるよ。
Folding screen can be set up , because it is collapsible .
How the unfolded screen could stand even for a moment .
○ まっすぐな木、まっすぐ使え。曲がった木、曲がったまま生かせ。
For lumber that is straight , use it straightly .
For lumber that is curved , use it bent , as is .
○ 登り道は迷わない。降り道に気をつけよ。転ぶし迷うし、淵もだんだん深くなる。
In climbing on the Path , one does not go astray . In descending , be careful .
One may stumble , slip , or go astray ,
The abyss alongside , will , at each downward step , become deeper and deeper .
○ 正直ものがバカをみることもあるさ、それでまた人生に味が出てくる。
Don't you know that honest people are , at times , taken advantage of ?
Thus , in a sense , an indescribable appealing to human life is marked on .
若し、生死を渡らんに必ず持戒に因るべし。 最澄

◆ 地に因って倒るるものの、還た地に従って起つが如し 湛然
Suppause someone stumbled by the ground , will stand on the ground again because of it .
Be patient without having regretfullness !
○ 人間は泣きながら生まれてきたんだ。
ながい人生だもの泣くこともあるさ、その度に生まれ変るんだきっと。
None didn't make the first-cry when one was brought to the world .
On the long journey of life and death , one should often cry for some reasons .
And each time one cries there certainly will be a change .
○ どんな悲しみにも、それにふさわしい深い幸せがきっとある。
In any deep-seated suffering or sadness ,
there is , without a doubt , a happiness that is a worty counter .
○ 風雪に耐えて愛もきづなもほんものになる。
In order to have true love and compassion , as well as friendship ,
one should live through the years of hardship on them .
○ 人間がつくっている世の中だもの、
人間が耐えられない苦しみなんか無いはずだよ。
This world is one made by human beings .
As such , there ought not to be any suffering that a human cannot endure .
○ がまんがまんここはがまんだ。どんな長雨もいつかやむ。
Be patient . Endure yourself . Don't loose your temper at this point .
There is no such rain won't stop forever .
○ 己には主となれ、人には従となれ。
To self be a master , to others be a follower .
