This week is Halloween Week! So we continued with our Halloween themed worksheets and readings. First we went over the homework:

We wrote down some words with silent "e," taking note of the patterns they have: a_e, o_e, and i_e. Activities like these also help with spelling and realizing that not all words in English are spelt like they sound, for example "light" is not "lite."After that, we checked the Making Plural Nouns homework, where the focus was turning Halloween themed singular nouns into plural ones, and fixing the sentences to make sense and match the pluralization. We also quickly reviewed and Halloween Word Problems #14.

After that, we started on the new in class materials and activities.

We sorted through common and proper nouns, with many of the words being related to fall and Halloween in some way (popular characters that are often Halloween costumes, candy names, doorbell, etc.). Then we did the Read! STOP! Think! Write! activity where both readings required the students to look for context clues and implied, rather than direct, answers. Finally, we ended the class by looking at and writing our own acrostic poems. The PUMPKIN poem was an example written by me, the BAT one was written together with the students, and on their own the students wrote SCARY poems. Everyone did a great job!
