To start the month of October, the Halloween month, we studied some phonics, graphs and counting, and rhyming pairs, but with a bit of a Halloween twist to them.

Most of the rhymes were for things related, in some way, to halloween or "spooky" stuff like owls, cats, the moon, and trees (specifically a barren one). When working with rhyming pairs, the thing to always note is the similiarity in spelling and how the combination of two letters together makes a certain sound. Usually that sound comes either at the beginning or end of a word, like with owl, but sometimes it will be more in the middle, like towel.

We also practiced reading graphs, counting, and documenting information (how many of each item / thing). Along with that, we practiced some important color related sight words and writing with the Meet Penelope worksheet.

For another phonics related activity, we looked at a phonogram, and learned different -ip words.

Using a phonogram not only helps to show how certain words are in the same word families, but also with spelling, and how just changing one letter can change one word into another.

Some other things that we did in class was practice reading through an online book called "Monster Puzzle Story," and also learn some action and movement (verb) words such as: stomp, fly, howl, crawl, and more through a song called "Halloween Stomp." This song was good for getting students up and moving in class.
