A little while later I bought John Moles' book The French Defence Main Line Winawer (Batsford, 1975), which I read cover to cover. He is a former Irish and Japanese champion. I believe that appears to be comfortable for him – to have a dependable defence in opposition to 1.e4. His first Chessbase DVD, “1.e4 repertoire – Grandmaster Lines Explained for Club Players” was well received by players and reveiwers alike. This book presents a complete Black repertoire. Collins adds some more interesting material and motifs such as the “h4-push” by White or the idea of taking the Nh6 with “Bxh6” in the advance variation of the French Defence (Svidler – Nguyen). I have the sense that it's much more structured than it used to That's quite a good book, and certainly gives many inspirational victories by Black; perhaps it errs a little too much on the optimistic/motivating side. Chess Stars has published: The French Defence. Annotated chess game, Carlsen Magnus, Fabiano Caruana,French Defence. Game has been taken from the recent tournament (Grand Slam 2012), played between chess genius Calsen as black and Fabiano. Black can enter the French defence, as a individual opening, on move 1. How much comes from the now-ubiquitous repertoire books? Game was full of swindles but at last Carlsen did penultimate mistake under time pressure and lost the game in winning position but the way he handled the endgame was just fabulous. The structure of the bishop, the eternal problem of the black player, out of game.
