”ミッドセンチュリーモダンのインテリアでコーディネートされた家” 

 

 

 

 

というイメージが浮かぶかもしれません。

 

 

 

 

でも、このミッドセンチュリーモダン、というデザインスタイルを表す言葉には、インテリアスタイル以外に、建築スタイルも含まれるんです。

 

 

 

 

 

カリフォルニアのパームスプリングスは、ミッドセンチュリーモダンスタイルの住宅が多いことで有名です。

 

　　 　

　

   

 

 

 

 

 

アメリカでは、ミッドセンチュリーモダンの住宅が、戦後の住宅需要のため数多く建設されました。

 

 

 

 

そして、アメリカ経済の繁栄により、 ニューヨークでもモダンな家具が備わった、新しい技術を使用した住宅がもとめられるようになります。

 

 

 

 

特に、マンハッタン郊外、コネチカット州のニューカナーン (New Canaan) とその周辺の地域は、ミッドセンチュリーモダン住宅のメッカとして知られています。

 

 

 

 

1940年代から50年代にかけて、「ハーバード・ファイブ (Harvard 5) 」と総称される建築家グループがニューカナーンに定住し、

 

 

 

 

彼らと同じ志を持った建築家たちも賛同し、100軒近くのミッドセンチュリーモダンの住宅が建てられました。

 

 

 

 

 

 

ハーバード・ファイブは、1940年代にコネチカット州ニューカナーンに居を構えたハーバード大学デザイン大学院出身の建築家で構成された建築家のグループです。

 

同大学院の講師であったマルセル・ブロイヤーと、その学生であったフィリップ・ジョンソンら５人の建築家らがハーバード・ファイブのメンバーです。

当時ニューヨークで活躍していた彼らが近代建築の実験場として選んだのが、マンハッタン郊外のニューカナーンでした。

 

 

 

 

1940年代以前、ニューカナーンは、18世紀に建設されたコロニアル様式の住宅が立ち並ぶ、伝統的なニューイングランドの町でした。

 

 

 

 

 

しかし、緩やかなゾーニング規制と手頃な広さの土地を持つニューカナーンは、当時実験的だった建築様式を試そうとする彼らに積極的に土地を提供したのです。

 

 

 

 

彼らはそれまでの華美な装飾に代わって機能性を重視し、伝統的な建築様式に対するアンチテーゼとして、自身や顧客らのために住宅建設を開始しました。

 

 

 

 

そんな彼らがニューカナーンの地にデザインしたのは、ミッドセンチュリーモダン住宅のなかでもヨーロッパのモダニズムの哲学を継承するインターナショナルスタイル。

 

 

 

 

そのコンセプトは、シカゴ出身の建築家ルイス・サリヴァンによる、近代建築理論の根源を表す有名な言葉、

 

　

　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

 

「形は機能に従う」

 “Form Follows Function”

 

 

 

 

という現代デザインの基本理念を踏襲しています。

 

 

 

 

インターナショナルスタイルは、ニューヨーク近代美術館  (MOMA)のキュレーターでハーバード・ファイブのひとり、

 

 

 

 

フィリップジョンソンが「モダン・アーキテクチャー：インターナショナル展 (Modern Architecture : International Exhibition)」でモダニズムを源流とする建築をインターナショナルスタイルと定義したことから始まります。

この展覧会で、 ル・コルビュジエ (Le Corbusier) が設計したパリ郊外にある住宅のサヴォア邸と、

ルートヴィヒ・ミース・ファン・デル・ローエ (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe) 設計による、当時のチェコスロバキアに建てられたトゥーゲントハット邸を含む15カ国37人の現代建築家のモダニズム建築が、インターナショナルスタイルと定義されました。

これらの住宅に共通する特徴は、シンプルなフォルムと直線による構成、装飾の排除、最小限の柱で構成された空間です。

 

 

 

 

そして、ガラス、スチール、コンクリートなどの工業化された大量生産技術が使用されています。

 

 

 

 

フィリップジョンソンはこの展覧会で、国や人種の違いを超えて、今後はこのようなデザインが国際的に共有され、近代建築の規格となることを提示したのです。

 

 

 

 

このことをきっかけに、インターナショナル・スタイルという、類型化されたデザイン住宅が世界中に普及していきました。

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

このように、ヨーロッパで始まったモダニズム建築が、1930年代にニューヨークで国際的な普遍性・汎用性を掲げて定義されたインターナショナルスタイル。

 

 

 

 

 

まさに、今日私たちが住んでいる家のベースとなるデザインが’確立されたことになります。

 

 

 

 

 

第二次戦後の1950年～1970年代になると、さらにすっきりとした直線ラインと床から天井までの広大なガラス面で構成されたデザインになり、

 

 

 

 

 

自然との一体感が反映された、インターナショナルスタイルが作られるようになります。

 

 

 

 

 

ハーバード・ファイブのひとり、フィリップ・ジョンソンの自邸だった、ニューカナーンにある「グラスハウス 」

ニューカナーンのインターナショナルスタイルのシンボル的な住宅で、現在は一般に公開されています。

シカゴ郊外にある、ルートヴィヒ・ミース・ファン・デル・ローエ (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe) のファンズワース邸。同じく一般公開されています。

このファンズワース邸は、インターナショナルスタイル住宅の最高傑作、且つインターナショナル住宅の完成形としても広く知られています。

 

 

 

 

ミースはこの建築において、インターナショナルスタイルの理念を最大限に具現化し、モダニズム建築のミニマリズムの概念を実現させました。

 

 

 

 

それは、スチールやガラスといった素材を用いてインテリアの「骨格」を作り、

 

 

 

 

空間を柱や壁で遮ることなく、自由に使えるようにしオープンスペースとシンプルさを最大限に強調しました。

 

 

 

 

また、自然を取り込み共生することによって、自然のなかに佇むかのような住宅を実現したのです。

 

 

 

 

ミースはこの究極のミニマルなデザイン住宅を、彼が用い続けた有名なことば、

 

 

 

 

 

 

「少ないことは豊かなことである」

Less is More

 

 

 

 

という理念のもとに完成させました。

 

 

 

 

これは、シンプルなデザインを追求することによって、より美しく豊かな空間が生まれるという、彼の建築家としての信念を表しています。

 

 

 

 

この言葉は、建築のみならずあらゆるデザイン、ひいては現代の私たちのライフスタイルや価値観にも通じる概念なのではないでしょうか。

 

 

 

 

 

ミースがデザインしたミッドセンチュリーモダン家具であるバルセロナチェアは、”Less is More” を象徴するような作品です

 

 

ニューヨークのインテリアショップ、ノル（Koll）で販売されています

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

このように、ヨーロッパのモダニズムの哲学から始り、アメリカ・ニューヨークで定義され、ミースのファンファーズ邸で完成したインターナショナルスタイルの住宅。

 

 

 

 

 

コンクリート、ガラス、スチールが主役のモダンなデザインと、木やフィールドストーンなどの有機的な素材の使用。

 

 

 

 

 

実用性を重視し、それぞれの目的に応じてデザインされた空間。

 

 

 

 

 

ミニマリズムを受け入れ、過剰な装飾を排除する。

 

 

 

 

 

インターナショナルスタイルの手法で建てられた住宅が、今や世界中で私たちの身近な住まいにも見られるようになったのです。

 

 

 

 

 

ニューカナーンを中心にニューヨーク郊外の地には、それらのルーツとなった住宅が100軒以上建てられ、

 

 

 

 

 

そのうちの約9０軒ほどが現存し、歴史的建造物として指定されながら現在も売買され、住人たちによって大切に管理されています。

 

 

 

 

 

緑豊かな郊外で、モダニズムや自然に敬意を表したインターナショナルスタイルの近代住宅。

 

 

 

 

 

それらはミッドセンチュリー期の住宅でありながら、まるで周囲の自然の一部であるかのように現在に至っています。

 

 

 

 

 

そんな近代建築の宝石のような住まいが多く存在する、ハーバード・ファイブやその同志たちによって建てられた、ニューヨーク郊外の住宅の数々。

The House by John Johansen in 1960, Redding, Connecticut

James Weatherill and his wife, Nancy Shalala, were living in Myanmar when they came across a listing for this 1960 home in southern Connecticut. The couple had wanted to restore a midcentury modern property, and when Mr. Weatherill saw this house, he announced, ‘This is where we are going to live.’

But, Mr. Weatherill, a United Nations official, says, ‘It was our dream to take something that had good bones and bring it back to its glory.’ They bought the property for $821,700 in July 2015 from the home’s original owner.

 

They did most of the work themselves over the last five years. ‘We’ve been slowly and methodically working through it,’ says Ms. Shalala, a small business owner. The main living space is ‘like a greenhouse,’ she says. ‘It’s hard to harm a plant in this house.’

 

The home was designed by celebrated modernist architect John Johansen, who was a member of the Harvard Five. ‘Our goal was to retain the essence of the house while updating,’ says Mr. Weatherill. ‘We wanted to retain the spirit of the house.’

 

One of the first things the couple did was replace all of the glass and windows. ‘The whole point of the house is to blur the line between inside and outside,’ says Mr. Weatherill. Ms. Shalala adds that because of the home’s elevation, ‘It gives you the sense of being at the same level as the tree tops.

 

The kitchen is completely new and features glass-fronted Bauformat cabinetry. It has an induction stovetop that faces floor-to-ceiling windows. ‘One of the reasons we designed it that way is so you can stand in the kitchen and look outside, not at a wall,’ says Mr. Weatherill, 50.

The original owner was an artist, and what is now the master suite used to be his gallery. ‘We chose that room because of the skylight,’ says Ms. Shalala, 54. ‘You can see the moon traverse the sky from our bed.’

 

The couple has purposefully never added up how much they’ve spent on renovations. ‘We don’t want to know. It’s a labor of love,’ says Ms. Shalala. Mr. Weatherill says that the ongoing project has been his hobby: ‘I tell my friends, “You pay to play golf or go skiing. We’re paying to renovate a house.”’

 

The home has three bedrooms and two full bathrooms over its 3,004 square feet. It is listed for $1.5 million with Inger Stringfellow of William Pitt and Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty.

 

The home sits on 3.34 acres and features an expansive deck off the main living area. The couple also did extensive work on the landscape, creating a Zen garden and repairing the natural stone quarry pool, which was filled with mud and scum when they bought the house.

 

The couple is selling because Mr. Weatherill has been relocated to Ukraine for work with no prospect of returning in the foreseeable future. ‘It’s with a very, very heavy heart that we are leaving this house,’ says Ms. Shalala.
