As the population of stars ages, it will consist either of the dead corpses of previous generations—dim objects such as white dwarfs or neutron stars and black holes—or of slowly evolving, faint, low-mass stars. So far these signals were detected only in supermassive black holes, which contain millions of solar masses and is located in the center of a galaxy. One spoonful of a neutron star would weigh about 1 billion tons. In between black holes and white dwarfs are objects called neutron stars. In the case of compact objects such as white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes, the gas in the inner regions becomes so hot that it will emit vast amounts of radiation (mainly X-rays), which may be detected by telescopes. They are much more dense than white dwarfs. It's funny, because the more wacky combinations of stars and compact object (white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole) we find or imagine, the more remarkable evolutionary scenarios astronomers can conceive of playing out. Black holes, like neutron stars, white dwarfs and normal stars, also have strong magnetic fields that get even stronger the closer you get to the event horizon, or the point from which light cannot escape. The RXTE had an observatory mission, using X-ray wavelength emissions to study the environment around white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes. Possible MACHOs include faint white dwarfs, neutron stars, isolated black holes, and substellar objects such as brown dwarfs or free floating giant planets. For 16 years NASA's Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer, RXTE to his friends, provided unprecedented views into the hearts of black holes, white dwarfs and neutron stars. RXTE sent data from its last science observation to the ground early on Jan. Such is the case of white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes. The satellite provided unprecedented views into the extreme environments around white dwarfs, neutron stars and black holes. Short duration gamma-ray bursts are thought to be caused by the merger of some combination of white dwarfs, neutron stars or black holes. It is thus an ideal technique to study the galactic population of such faint or dark objects as brown dwarfs, red dwarfs, planets, white dwarfs, neutron stars, black holes, and Massive Compact Halo Objects.
