Think Silicon Valley for technology. Hollywood and entertainment. Wall Street and the financial industry.Clusters are a geographical concentration where interconnected businesses, suppliers, labor and associated institutions come together for competitive advantages and gains.This year, the Port of Long Beach will award more that $700 million in contracts to companies. Our sister port in Los Angeles does an equal amount. Together, we have over $1.4 billion as leverage to attract maritime related companies to locate in the San Pedro Bay area. Currently, many of these businesses are located outside Long Beach and San Pedro. We need to change this because these are great paying jobs which would bring additional revenue to the city in the form of payroll tax, sales tax and investment.I learned about Maritime Clusters while attending a conference in Europe. Every major port in Europe and Asia has a thriving Maritime Cluster. Out of the top 15 Maritime Clusters in the world, only two are American: New York and Houston.
