ビル・ゲイツがあるハイスクールでスピーチをした、
「学校では教えてくれない人生に役立つ11のルール」
というものがインターネットで出回っています。
実際は彼自身の言葉ではなく、彼が抜粋で
チャールズ・J・サイクスの著書「Dumbing Down Our Kids」から
引用したものだそうです。
欧米的なルールではありますが、
なかなか的を射た面白いルールなのでご紹介します。
１、人生は公平ではない。それに慣れよ。
２、世界は君の自尊心を気にかけてはくれない。
君の気分に関係なく
世界は君が仕事を終わらせることを期待している。
３、高校を出てすぐ6万ドルの年収を稼ぎはしない。
携帯電話(当時は高かった)を持った副社長にもならない。
自分で両方を稼ぎ出すまでは。
４、先生が厳しすぎると思うなら、上司を持ってみろ。
５、ハンバーガーを引っくり返すということは
沽券(こけん)にかかわることではない。
君たちの祖父母はハンバーガーを引っくり返すことを
別の表現を使った。それはチャンスと呼ばれた。
６、君が失敗したらそれは両親のせいではない。文句を言わずに学べ。
７、君らが生まれる前は、君らの両親は
今のように退屈な人たちではなかった。
そんな風になったのは、君らのために支払いをし、
服を洗い、君らがどんなにいけてるか、
という自慢を聞いているうちにそうなったのだ。
親の時代から生存する寄生虫から森を守る前に、
自分の洋服ダンスのダニ駆除から始めよう。
８、学校は勝者・敗者を決めなくなったかもしれないが、
人生は違う。
学校によっては君が落ちこぼれないようにしてくれたり、
正しい答えが導き出せるまで、何度でも機会をくれる。
実際の人生とは全く似ても似つかない。
９、人生は学期ごとに分けられていない。
夏休みは無いし、ほとんどの雇用主は
君が自分を見出すことに興味を持たない。
それは自分の時間にやれ。
１０、テレビは本当の人生ではない。
現実では、人は喫茶店にいつまでもいられるわけはなく、
仕事に行かなくてはいけないのだ。
１１、オタクには親切にしよう。彼らの下で働く可能性が高い。

generation of kids with no concept of reality and how

RULE 1
Life is not fair - get used to it.
RULE 2
The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world
will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel
good about yourself.
RULE 3
You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out
of high school. You won't be a vice president with
car phone, until you earn both.
RULE 4
If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a
boss. He doesn't have tenure.
RULE 5
Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your
grandparents had a different word for burger flipping
they
called it Opportunity.
RULE 6
If you mess up,it's not your parents' fault, so don't
whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
RULE 7
Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as
they are now. They got that way from paying your bills,
cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about
how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest
from the parasites of your parent's generation, try
delousing the closet in your own room.
RULE 8
Your school may have done away with winners and losers,
but life has not. In some schools they have abolished
failing grades and they'll give you as many times as
you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the
slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
RULE 9
Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get
summers off and very few employers are interested in
helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.
RULE 10
Television is NOT real life. In real life people
actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
RULE 11
Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for
one.
