The other day, my son was cooking a stew, chopping up a variety of vegetables and meat, and he said, “It takes so long to cook!”

I agreed with him. Cooking from scratch takes time and effort. But I also thought to myself that, even though it takes time and energy, there is something meaningful about using our five senses to fully experience life.

Chopping vegetables and meat. Sautéing them. Mixing various fragrant spices. Touching the ingredients. Smelling the aromas of the spices. Hearing the sound of chopping fresh vegetables and the sizzling of them in hot oil. Tasting the food and adjusting the flavors. Witnessing nature’s colorful hues.

In this era, when AI has become more and more prominent, it might be helpful—and even important—to consciously choose to do things less efficiently in order to feel human and enjoy the human experience.

He agreed and said, “And if we make our own food, we know what ingredients we used and what spices we added. So, we understand better how they affect our bodies and can adjust accordingly. And it’s much better food, both taste-wise and nutrition-wise.” We both agreed: “It’s all good!”

Mix instant coffee, sugar, hot water (1:1:1 ratio).

Pour it over cold milk. Yum!
