Thanks for the reminder about the DisplayPort functionality! I’ve updated the review with a note to reflect that. It’s not that I don’t appreciate what the DisplayPort offers; rather that it doesn’t at all cater to the consumer side of the equation.

That may be true Jason, but the specs are not alleged as they are published on Microsoft’s website which is the reason why I provided the URL to microsoft’s specs. The only reason why I also referenced another “analysis” was to point out the fact that the RT is not meant to compete with the ultrabooks, but rather the Pro is. This is also coming directly from quotes that Steve Balmer made. The RT is targeting devices at one price point (iPads), and the soon to be released Pro is targeting ultrabooks at a totally different price point and functionality. The Pro is a slightly thicker system packing a better CPU, more memory, higher display resolution, excellent DPI, more storage, and most importantly Full Windows capability (unlike RT). So to reiterate, if comparisons are going to made with ultrabooks with battery such as Toshiba PA3615U-1BRM Battery, Toshiba PA3615U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PABAS115 Battery, Toshiba PA3593U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3594U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3595U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba Satellite U305 Battery, Toshiba PA3831U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3832U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3929U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3930U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba Portege R700 Battery, the comparison should be with the product that is designed to compete with the ultrabooks, which is the Pro not the RT. I think once you get your hands on the Pro you will be quite pleased with it and will rate it on the same playing field as the ultrabooks. The specs are excellent and I believe Microsoft felt they had to come to market with their own hardware because the partnering manufacturers have not delivered products to take their OS to a new level, and Apple was delivering on that front. Well, Microsoft now has made a statement and the Pro will be very successful.

Thank you so much for the in-depth review of the Dell XPS 12 convertible. I am sure this ultra book will work nicely as a laptop. However, I like to know how it had worked as a tablet in your test/review. I ask this because some reviewers have mentioned that this machine is a bit heavy for a tablet. Have you experienced the same issue? In addition, how it performed in general in the tablet mode? Does it perform as good in the tablet mode as it does in the laptop mode? I truly appreciate your answer.

If you plan to use the XPS 12 *mainly* as a tablet, you may want to give careful consideration. What you’re paying for with this machine is blazing speed and its ultrabook form factor, along with a great touchscreen. Performance is just as strong in tablet mode, but you the weight will become an issue after awhile (it’s 3+ pounds, after all).

Thank you Jason for answering my question. If I understand correctly, what you are saying is that DELL XPS 12 convertible works great both as tablet and laptop but the problem is that it may be too heavy to be qualified as a convenient tablet. I think if weight is the only problem, then I am ok with this computer. I agree that 3.5 LB may be heavy for a tablet but I am also considering its’ performance to compensate the downside. This is my opinion only.

When I had read there was not a standard HDMI port I was a bit disappointed, as I often plug my laptop into my living room TV (have a hidden cable that pops up by the couch). But then I read that it has Intel’s built in WiDi, and it seems like this should handle that use case with no wires at all… I would just need to buy a WiDi receiver for the TV. Have you had any experience/issues with that functionality?
