The keyboard boasts

Welcome to a laptop battery specialist of the Toshiba Laptop Battery

The display is outstanding with the Windows 8 tile-based Modern UI but in desktop mode, icons and text are almost too small because of the dense resolution. An easy fix is increasing your text size to 125% for best results. The takeaway, however, is that this is an exemplary display for its 12” size.

Dell’s XPS 12 display also houses a standard 1.3MP webcam with dual digital-array digital microphones, capable of capturing video at 1280 x 1024 pixels. I tested it during a live Google Hangout for the VideoGameWriters.com podcast, and it delivered clear image quality even in lower lighting conditions. Remember, though we’re accustomed to a second higher performance camera on tablets, its inclusion here would be unwieldy as the backside of the tablet would be covered by the keyboard, and few people enjoy snapping photographs with a laptop form factor.

Normally wireless connectivity is an uninteresting feature assumed to “just work” and doesn’t warrant remark. However, Microsoft has set a high benchmark with the 2×2 MIMO antennas available in the Surface. Just glance at the image to the right for proof: Here, I put the XPS 12 with battery like Toshiba PA3729U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3730U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba Satellite P505 Battery, Toshiba PA3640U-1BAS Battery, Toshiba PA3640U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba Qosmio F55 Battery, Toshiba PA3536U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3537U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba Satellite P205 Battery, Toshiba PA3589U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba PA3609U-1BRS Battery, Toshiba Qosmio F45 Battery and the Surface in the same location and took simultaneous screenshots of available wireless networks on each machine. As you can see the Surface detects several additional access points. I didn’t experience any wireless issues on the XPS 12; connections were stable and never disconnected. But it’s a point worth mentioning for users who may be reliant on a weak or distant wireless signal.

It needs to be said upfront and with hearty praise: the glass integrated trackpad is roomy, smooth and downright luxurious. Windows 8 gestures are also supported on the trackpad, giving the user some choice over how to interact with the OS.

The keyboard boasts slight key indentation which I always prefer, and the overall typing experience is responsive and pleasant. There’s nothing that screams differentiation with the keyboard, but instead represents the quality we’d expect from an ultrabook. (Seriously though, you need to try this trackpad…)

While ultrabooks and tablets definitely aren’t renowned for their superior audio quality, the maximum volume was surprisingly loud while remaining clear and without distortion. When this converts to tablet mode for media consumption, you won’t be straining to hear what you’re watching as we’ve become used to with so many other products. The XPS 12 definitely meets sound needs for both casual use and everyday work environments.

Unfortunately, the entirety of this review can’t be all praise, as some curious omissions detract from the overall experience. I have three specific gripes, none of which should be considered dealbreakers, but all of which are worth considering.

Hey, I agree with the SD card reader. However, with the HDMI, a display port converter cable will convert it over. The display port allows multiple displays–and I think that is why they chose it instead of regular HDMI.
