この間の記事で、「奇兵隊は、思想的にも、政治的にも、宗教的にも、中立で、みんなが平等だ」という話をしましたが、その記事を書きながら、１９４７年世界医師会総会の「ジュネーブ宣言」が思い浮かんだので、ちょっと記事にしてみますね。
医学生時代に、この「ジュネーブ宣言」を聞いて、なんて素晴らしい宣言なんだろう、って思ったことを思い出します。この、「医師の一人として参加を許されるにあたり・・・」という、控えめながらも強い意志を秘めた書き出しが好きですね。今でも自分の部屋に額に飾って時々読み返しては、反省することもしばしば。
まだまだ自分は、理想には程遠いですが、時には理想に立ち返ることも必要だと思っています。
それでは、世界医師会の「ジュネーブ宣言」です。
ジュネーブ宣言 Declaration of Geneva （１９４７年）
医師の一人として参加を許されるにあたり
At the time of being admitted as a member of the medical profession,
・私は、自分の生涯を人類に奉仕することを厳粛に誓うものである。
- I solemnly pledge myself to consecrate my life to the service of humanity.
・私は、恩師が当然受けるべきである深い尊敬と感謝の念を恩師に捧げる。
- I will give to my teachers the respect and gratitude which is their due.
・私は、良心と尊厳を持って医業に従事する。
- I will practice my profession with conscience and dignity.
・私は、第一に患者の健康について考慮を払う。
- The health of my patient will be my first consideration.
・私は、患者の信頼に応えて秘密を尊重し、その死後までもそれを守る。
- I will respect the secrets which are confided in me, even after the patient has died.
・私は、全力をあげて光輝ある医学の伝統を擁護する。
- I will maintain by all the means in my power, the honor and the noble traditions of the medical profession,
・私の同僚は、私の兄弟である。
- My colleagues will be my sisters and brothers.
・私は、診療にあたって、宗教・国籍・人種・政党・社会的地位によって患者を差別しない。
- I will not permit considerations of age, disease or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual orientation, or social standing to intervene between my duty and my patient.
・私は、いかなる脅迫があろうとも、生命の始まりから人命を最大限に尊重する。人道の法則に反して医学的知識を用いるようなことはしない。
- I will maintain the utmost respect for human life from its beginning even under threat and I will not use my medical knowledge contrary to the laws of humanity.
・私は、他からの拘束を受けず、自分自身の名誉にかけてこれらのことを厳粛に約束する。
- I make these promises solemnly, freely and upon my honor.
少しでもこの理想に近づけるように頑張って行きたいと思います。
