  Album name :

Teichiku Entertainment / Lawson Entertainment Co., Ltd. TEA17

Elastic groove.

Beautiful melody. Hard bop, jazz rock, fusion.

No label can capture the essence of this work.

The pure crystal is shining again now.

The popular work "Leeward" is popular as "Mabumi's fan" among fans.

It is the second album recorded in 1978 by Masafumi Yamaguchi, a saxophonist who was active in the George Otsuka Group and the Kolgen Band (later The Players).

All 4 songs of "Dawn", "Dewdrop", "Distant Thunder" and "Leeward", the title/theme spreads in front of you as a vivid image in response to the musicality.

A groove that combines dynamism and elasticity.

A beautiful melody that touches the heartstrings while being dignified. Hard bop, jazz rock, fusion.

All of them apply, but none of them can tell the essence of this work.

It's just a pure "masterpiece" that doesn't need any label. Text by Yusuke Ogawa (universounds/Deep Jazz Reality)

  Performer :

Born in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture on September 1, 1946, he started trombone in a brass band in a junior high school.

At the same time as entering Keio University, I got my saxophone and joined a full jazz band circle called KMP NEW SOUND ORCHESTRA. I spend four years of saxophone, jazz cafe and mahjong. After graduation, he worked for the Yamaha Music Promotion Association for about half a year, but he aspired to be a musician, and in 1969, he started activities at Ochanomizu Naru, which the late Katsuo Narita had just opened, and Shibuya Oscar, which was performing live at that time. Friends at that time were Fumio Itabashi (p) Tsunodahiro (drs) Ryojiro Furusawa (drs) Mikio Masuda (p) Mitsuaki Furuno (b) Hideo Sekine (drs) and others.

In 1970, he made his debut in Pittin and Taro in earnest with the Kawasaki Ryo (Guitar) Quintet, and at this time he was still playing alto saxophone. In 1971, he was selected as George Otsuka (drs), switched from alto to tenor, and the George Otsuka Quintet, consisting of Shunzo Ohno (Tp), Toshiyuki Daitoku (p) and Mitsuaki Furuno (b), was very popular in various places. In 1974, after leaving the George Otsuka Quintet, he formed his own quartet and worked mainly in a live house. The members around this time were Ichiro Doi (p), Kosuke Sakai (b), Ikuo Sakurai (b), Hideo Sekine (drs), etc. In 1976, he released his first leader work "After the Rain". In 1978, when he released his second work "Lee Ward", he won the {Shinjuku Jazz Award}.

Also in 1976, he participated in the formation of a new group of the late Hiromasa Suzuki (p). This group was originally named <Korgen Band>, and it was a group of popular studio musicians named Tsunehide Matsuki (g), Akira Okazawa (e-b) and Yasushi Ichihara (drs). Later, drums were replaced by Yuichi Tokashiki, and in 1979, the name was changed to <The Players> on the occasion of releasing an album from CBS Sony, and it was a super popular band in the fusion boom at that time.

In 1978, I participated in a Japanese concert tour to coincide with the release of the New York recording album "Maracaibo Cornpawn" by George Otsuka, a music teacher. The other members were super luxurious members Kenny Kirkland (p) John Scofield (g) Miroslav Vitous (b) and experienced a major culture shock. In 1981, in New York, Kenny Kirkland (p) Miroslav Vitous (b) Tony Williams (drs) recorded "MABUMI" as a member, and took this opportunity to leave <The Players> and George University again He joined Tsuka's new group <Maracaibo> and was active in performance and composition until 1986. In 1987, he released "SQUAD" with the late Motohiko Hino (drs) and others, and after that, he repeated sessions and recordings with many musicians such as Masahiko Sato (p) Fumio Karashima (p) and Shigeharu Mukai (tb).

In 2005 and 2009, Masahiko Sato Group also appeared at the Mers Jazz Festival in Germany and the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands.

Currently, he has appeared in live houses in various places, including Ochanomizu Naru, mainly his own tuartet.
