Investigators are piecing together the sequence of events leading to a horrific car crash in Drummondville that killed four young men.

Speeding is believed to have been involved, she said. The speed limit where the accident happened is 50 kilometres an hour.

Sgt. Coulombe said the possibility that alcohol consumption played a role in the crash is being investigated. The coroner, Yvon Garneau, told local television news that he has requested a blood sample from the driver’s body to test for alcohol.

Police identified the dead as Carl Francoeur-Ouellette, 22, the driver; Alexandre Jutras, 18; Gabriel Savoie, 19; and Jean-Benoît Pelletier, 18. All were residents of Drummondville, about 115 kilometres northeast of Montreal.

The four were taken to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The wreckage was so mangled that the three passengers – one in the front and two in back – had to be extricated by firefighters using the jaws of life, Ms. Carrier said.

“I can’t believe the tree is still standing after that kind of impact,” she said.

Sgt. Coulombe said it’s too early to say when the police investigation will be completed.
