普通に
can't は 可能性がない
couldn't は 可能性がなかった
ということかと思っていたら
なんと、もっと豊かな意味があるという
can't = strong beliefs = must
Oh, it can't be true!
本当に違いない ＝ It must be true.
本当なわけない ＝ It can't be true.
一方で、
couldn't = completely impossible
Other scientists say that there couldn't be life on Mars.
つまり、絶対ない、ありえない、という意味。
なるほど～。
